AB Dick's Linked Drupa Press And Plate Technology
AB Dick will be highlighting the automation of plate production at Drupa 2004.
An outside bureau was making most of our plates and that meant having to wait a few days for them.
Consequently it wasn't viable for us to print 500 copies of a multi-page newsletter on a litho press," explained Roger Rees, who heads up the print and graphics section at the council.
Added to that, there was an increasing demand for full colour leaflets and other documentation from its two-colour A3 press, which required top quality plates.
That led to the council looking at a number of platesetters.
"We bought the DPM 2508 because we wanted a polyester platesetter that was compatible with our presses and A B Dick offered us the best deal.
They've backed it up with great support during the installation and training," added Rees.
The Print and Graphics section has a 'spend to save' policy and Roger Rees is confident that the investment in the DPM platesetter has paid off.
"It's much faster and more cost effective to produce the plates in-house.
This section has a commitment to find the best deal for its customers and that has meant putting quite a lot of work out, simply because we could not compete.
Now we are doing virtually everything in-house from concept through to printing and finishing, except for very long print runs and large format work," he stressed.
