In a bold move, JD Printing, an independent jobbing printer in Farnborough, (UK) has traded in all its litho equipment for a 46 Karat digital imaging, waterless press from A B Dick The company has a small retail shop, which also provides mono and colour copying as well as T-shirt printing

It services a range of customers in Hampshire, Surrey and London, as well as walk-in trade.

"Four colour work is a growing area of our business and I wanted to expand it in a big way.

I made the first step about two or three years ago when I installed a complete litho and DTP package from A B Dick comprising a two colour Hamada landscape press with a DPM 2508 polyester platesetter linked to a Scanmaster and an Epson proofer.

This served us well and we also built up a good relationship with A B Dick during that time.

The company is very responsive and instilled confidence in me that it knew what it was talking about when it started selling the digital imaging press.

However, it was only once I saw it being demonstrated at the showroom in Brentford that I knew I had to have one.

For a business like ours it offers so many benefits," said Jim Dalton, the proprietor of J D Printing.

"If I was asked to prioritise then, without doubt, productivity would be the most important.

It allows us to double our productivity with no more staff.

Because everything is done automatically in one process, it frees people up to do other things," he continued.

"What it has given us is a four colour press, whereas we had to put a job through twice on a two colour Hamada and the quality is excellent.

The make-ready time is impressive and, given its printing speed, we can turn four colour jobs round in a day.

Our customers know that they can give us 2,000 A4 four colour leaflets to print and they can have them the same day.

It's a green machine too with no need for chemicals, which is increasingly important these days," added Dalton.

The changeover from traditional litho to the digital imaging press was almost seamless and thanks to the support of A B Dick and its team, J D Printing was up and running in three days and did not look back since, he commented.

"It's certainly earning its keep and has made it much easier to handle all the four colour work.

Our customers have been very impressed, both with the speed of turnround and the quality of the job.

I can't ask for more than that," concluded Dalton.
