A Hamada two colour landscape press and a DPM 2508 platesetter from A B Dick are part of an investment for Hillsprint, a general commercial printer in Thirsk (UK) The company has just moved to new, modern facilities and updated both its pre-press and post-press equipment

Hillsprint's Mike Boon said: "When my wife and I purchased the business three years ago, we inherited a company that had an excellent portfolio of clients, including some major public authorities, as well as local firms.

However, we knew that at some stage we would need to make a significant investment to upgrade the equipment and the premises.

As neither of us had come from the printing industry, we spent the last three years learning the business and meeting customers and suppliers." He continued: "The opportunity came to make the investment after the retirement of our manager, who had been with the company for 42 years.

To move forward with the times, it was clear that we needed to reduce the staff and bring in new technology to automate as many processes as possible.

As personnel left the company, we did not replace them.

However, we did involve the remaining staff in our purchasing decisions.

We took them to the Northprint exhibition and spent a lot of time looking at what was available and what the best options were for us." Boon said that having bought a Canon 1150 for short run digital print, the company focused on the litho side of the business, where it had a single colour Oliver and two AM Multilith presses.

"Besides the general stationery, which is mainly printed with two or four colour logos, we also print a lot of double sided four colour jobs.

That meant that we had to put a sheet through the Oliver eight times and wait for it to dry each time.

We couldn't justify a four colour press but we wanted a two colour landscape machine with automatic plate changing and alcohol dampening, which is why the Hamada appealed to us.

We did look at other presses and saw them used in printer's premises.

We were given excellent references on the Hamada and on the service and support from A B Dick, which we can now endorse." At the same time, Hillprint dispensed with its conventional plate making equipment to invest in a DPM 2508 polyester platemaker.

One of the main advantages was that company was able to buy the press and the platemaker from the same supplier in the full knowledge that it was proven technology.

A B Dick said that it has sold many bundled packages to printers throughout the UK.

The polyester plates also run well on Multiliths, added the company.

Boon explained: "The quality and the accuracy that we are now achieving is first class.

The new equipment has significantly improved our productivity.

Our graphic designer decides whether a job should be printed litho or digital.

She downloads the litho jobs to the DPM 2508, exposes them and puts the plates in an envelope ready for the press minder.

It's already attracted new customers and we haven't started promoting it seriously.

We believe that what we can now offer will be very attractive to many companies in the local area.

Our next plan is to replace the Mulitlith presses and we will certainly go back to A B Dick because the company has been superb.".
