Print management and business communications company, Accessplus has co-sponsored a survey report into the print and print services by leading international analyst house, the Aberdeen Group According to the survey, 50 per cent of respondents reported an increased need for procurement specialists to be involved in buying print and 41 per cent of respondents reported they had no supplier performance measurement tactics

The report revealed that a significant number of respondents reported print costs were on the rise and print spend accounts for, on average, four-to-six per cent of operating expenses, with several key industries, such as publishing, consumer products and financial services, reporting a much higher percentage.

Forty-one per cent of print is purchased 'off-contract', whilst 80 per cent of respondents are manually sourcing, or purchasing print materials and service, were other findings.

However, at the same time, approximately 67 per cent of respondents classified as 'best in class' enterprises are using some form of automated print purchasing process, whilst consistency and maintenance of brand image is a critical factor for companies looking to refine their print purchasing processes.

The report, titled 'Category Spend Management: Print and Print Services' is available for download via the Accessplus website.

Accessplus said that the report examined the processes, technology priorities and strategic actions of 138 enterprises, complied from an online survey and telephone interviews with marketing and procurement executives.

Jason Cromack, chief executive officer of Accessplus, said: "This report provides a wide-ranging assessment of the current state of the print procurement market.

The aim of the study was to identify best practises for print procurement and provide a framework for enterprises to assess their own contract management capabilities." He explained: "The report reiterates our own experience of the print procurement market and identifies both current issues and the key drivers and opportunities for future growth for those companies involved in the print procurement sector.

Accessplus's strategy is to consistently invest in and sponsor research that offers us and others in the industry a clear view of the market and an assessment of where the real, tangible business benefits are for both those who procure print and those, like Accessplus, that provide print management and business communications services right through the print supply chain.".
