Maping, the manufacturers of the Fastbind range of photobook makers, which are distributed in the UK by Ashgate Automation, will launch two new machines at Ipex 2010.

Ashgate Automation that Mapin, building on the success of the manually operated Fastbind Booxter, which staples the text block within a cushioned spine to produce slim photobooks, is to introduce a semi-automated model with three stapling features.

Press button operated the Booxter Trio automatically staples the book block.

The gravity aided positioning deck and the adjustable back support ensure a perfect, square alignment.

The upright position of the block, combined with the stapler head position, ensure accurate stapling vertically and horizontally.

There are three stapling modes, one being single sided for stripe backs and simple stapling, while another system is double sided, which allows stapling from both sides, making it appropriate for soft and hard covers.

There is also a ring hole version, which places staples between standard ring hole positions.

The Fastbind Booxter Trio is said to handle photo paper and coated stock as easily as normal copy paper.

It can bind sheet lengths up to 325mm and 8mm thickness of office paper and up to 5mm thick coated paper (depending on the material).

Ashgate Automation added that the Booxter Trio can be expanded with the Fastbind Cover Settter.

Together with the cover setter, users can also bind hard cover books, such as photo albums and year books.

Also new at Ipex 2010 will be the Fastbind Presso for creating grooves in hard cover books, produced on the Fastbind Booxter.

The Presso is a thermal press, the Fastbind Presso's groove quality is claimed to improve the appearance of all hard cover books.

It makes symmetrical, deep, smooth grooves that hold tight against the book block.

It can be used with hard cover books up to 45mm thick with a spine stick thickness of 0.8mm to 3mm and spine length of up to 470mm.

On display at Ipex will also be the Fotomount F46e, a large format photobook maker.

Lewis Price, Fastbind product manager at Ashgate Automation, said: 'We believe that the lay flat edge-to-edge panoramic view on each page approach is the most popular style of binding for photobooks, wedding albums and year books, for example, which is where the Fotomount F46e comes into its own.

The Fotomount builds the page block by inserting a self-adhesive card mount sheet (200micron or 850micron) between each folded spread.

The Fastbind Mountinglift system controls the accuracy of the page block during its assembly.

Hard back covers up to 18in x 18in can be made using the new Fastbind Casematic H46Pro in conjunction with the Fotomount 46e.

The Fastbind Casematic casemaking machine will also be operated at Ipex 2010 in conjunction with the Fastbind Elite hot glue, perfect binder for manufacturing short run hard back covers of a quality that previously could only be achieved by a trade binder, claimed Ashgate Automation.

The cover is printed onto a self-adhesive outer sheet and laminated for durability.

The Casematic is used to mount the cover onto the grey boards and spine.

The finished cover can then be bound onto the printed pages using the Fastbind Elite perfect binder.

The Elite is ideal for print and copy shops, publishers, binderies, school yearbooks and photographers wanting a flexible binder for both hard and soft back covers.

The end result is a perfect bound book that is strong, square and affordable.
