Stencil Film's Faithful Fine Art Reproduction
MacDermid Autotype is enabling a Dutch screen printer working in India to create large format prints from original works of art with its indirect stencil film.
Over the last 13 years the company has developed a range of print techniques that have raised levels of definition and photo-realism to new standards that mirror those possible with offset printing, yet retain the vibrant colours associated with the screen process, said MadDermid Autotype.
That expertise was recognised at this year's FESPA show in Munich when Lorenz Boegli was awarded three gold medals, two silver medals and two bronze medals in the categories for greetings cards, books, fine art reproduction and metal products.
Lorenz Boegli uses Five Star and Alphastar from MacDermid Autotype for producing all its stencils for screen printing.

Film Provides Thick Gloss Without Yellowing
The Autoflex AP film is now claimed to offer a 0.010-inch thick gloss with reduced yellowness, following improvements made by MacDermid Autotype.
The indirect films are claimed to have high print definition, unrivalled resolution capabilities and create a suitable stencil for high quality printing, giving a low stencil profile with a very flat stencil surface (low Rz) on a 180cm mesh which is about the finest possible in screen fabric technology, added MaDermid Autotype.
In addition, the films are also said to offer the fastest and easiest method of producing a high quality stencil for short run screen printing.
Lorenz Boegli has worked with Autotype's products for a number of years and achieves its best results by combining the Five Star and Alphastar films.
The films offer different levels of contrast, enabling Lorenz Boegli to use Alphastar for reproducing light tones and Five Star for the darker tones.
Combining the two films, however, enables effects to be achieved that go well beyond conventional screen print reproduction.
Lorenz Boegli, managing director of the company, explained: "For a specialised triplex print, for instance, the sky area would be printed in firstly using Alphastar for light grey tones, then black with Five Star and finally, in the third stage, medium grey with Five Star again.
This results in almost photo-realistic quality images in only three stages." He continued: "Using Five Star and Alphastar enables us to obtain the finest screen and the most beautiful typography.
It is essential that the films have excellent dimensional stability as our half tone dot pattern has now been matched exactly to the film gradation levels.
Just as importantly, we monitor the results from the film closely and in the last 10 years have observed no deviation in quality or technical performance and we know from our experiences that no other film is capable of achieving this high and consistent standard of quality." The company's specialities include the production of high quality typography using a fine screen technique based on a resolution of 120 lines per centimetre, plus a wide range of special effects using iridescent printing, thermo-reactive pigments, relief lacquers and rub-off inks.
Lorenz Boegli's screen printing knowledge and the ability of the company's craftsmen and women has attracted many international artists, including Ilya Kabakov, Roni Horn, Peter Doig, Jan Jedlicka, Peter Fischli, David Weiss, Balthasar Burkhard, Roman Signer and Yves Netzhammer.
