Silicone Release Papers - New Narrow Web Markets?
Siliconised release papers and films give the narrow-web converter the opportunity to explore a host of niches, beyond labels alone.
Siliconised release papers and films give the narrow-web converter the opportunity to explore a host of niches, beyond labels alone.
That is the opinion of Avery Dennison, who said that the uses of such release papers stretch from medical and industrial applications, to hygiene and envelopes, amongst others.
Until now though, the lack of a reliable source for the materials had kept such areas of business elusive to most potential suppliers in the company's opinion.
Fasson Rapid-Roll - the product platform from Avery Dennison Roll Materials Europe, where non-adhesive reel products are offered at short notice and in small volumes - could help converters enter those markets profitably, believes the company.
As a result, the company has added machine-coated kraft liners and PE-coated papers to its Industrial Liners programme.
Machine-coated kraft paper is a specially coated machine finished paper.
Its smooth surface and its quality make it suitable for applications such as envelope closures, fastenings on hygiene products and decorative self-adhesive vinyls and window coverings, as well as labels and industrial fasteners said Avery.
PE-coated paper has a polyethylene coating on one or both sides to enhance the barrier properties of the paper's surface.
That reduces the chance of moisture being absorbed from the environment and maintains the papers dimensional stability.
As a result, PE-coated paper in that range may be used for self-adhesive tapes and envelope closures added the company.
The new siliconised release liners are claimed to withstand the most demanding of environments, even when dispensing speed is an important issue.
The company believes that they offer excellent converting and die-cutting properties, as well as hygroscopic and dimensional stability.
Avery added that the addition of the machine-coated krafts and PE-coated products significantly strengthens the industrial liners range, which also offers a range of clay-coated and glassine papers as well as a number of siliconised PP and PET films.
Since converting and end-use conditions differ significantly from one application to the next, all papers in the Industrial Liners range were available in a wide variety of grades in order to meet specific demands with regard to release properties, weight, and caliper.
In addition, the company added that many custom-finished products were available.
The silicone coating could be specified according to defined release properties and double-sided silicone coating was possible on glassines - even with differing release properties on each side if required.
Custom-slit widths were available from 12mm for single-coated products, and from 100mm for double-coated materials.
To meet end-user branding requirements, products could also be supplied pre-printed with logos or company names: siliconised products could be printed in single colour flexo, either on the reverse side or underneath the silicone coating.
All stock items in the range, including the siliconised release liners, are available in minimum order quantities of 1,000 sqaure metres.
The company is also offering a 48-hour shipping service ex-works on standard stock items and a four-week lead-time on custom-finished products.
Converters sourcing materials from the range could, therefore, be very flexible when offering non-adhesive products to the market.
Avery claimed that the finishing possibilities, papers and films that were offered meant that up to 180 product permutations were possible from within the range.
Martin Hilgenstock, the product manager for Fasson Rapid-Roll, explained: "We believe that partnership is the way for converters and their customers to achieve constant improvement in productivity and quality.
We have a constant commitment to creating improvements in the value chain.
In the case of Fasson Rapid-Roll, our technicians analyse both the end-use and processing requirements to identify the product that is ideally suited for the application.
The extension of the Industrial Liners range, coupled with constant support from the Fasson team, provides the ideal platform for success in a host of high-value markets.".
