The BPIF Training has completed the first phase of the development of its training services through being awarded ISO9001: 2000 accreditation for its quality procedures "Although there is still room for improvement up to a Grade 1, we now have a cohesive strategy in place driven by employers

The Print Education Forum and the Government will ensure that our industry is underpinned by an effective, appropriate and credible training delivery network," said BPIF chief executive Michael Johnson, who took over the training business in April 2003.

BPIF Training is the UK's only national provider of work based learning for adults and young people in the printing industry and runs training for over half of the sector's modern apprenticeships.

Ruth Exelby, the BPIF's head of commercial training has overseen a dramatic improvement in the delivery structure and said: "We will now be working with 18 training co-ordinators in the field working across the UK to ensure effective delivery of NVQs, key skills and the new technical certificate qualifications wherever a company needs it." BPIF President Ken Iddon is determined to build on this success to support the industry: "I'm delighted with this achievement which confirms the ability of the BPIF Training organisation to deliver.

Our priority now is to raise awareness and stimulate demand in the sector so that companies grasp the urgency of supplementing our declining skill base to ensure the competitive future of print," he said.

Michael Johnson, who has visited over 180 printing companies in the last two years emphasised: "Less than 5% of printing companies currently have modern apprentices however in my experience, it is clear that the majority, if not all of these companies, are performing in the top quartile of profitability.

As well as securing our skills base for the future we need to communicate the advantage that workforce training brings to companies here and now; where companies can immediately see the return on their very modest investment." The BPIF is working alongside the Print Education Forum's awareness programme and promotes its own training needs analysis' programme, which can pinpoint the current and future skill needs within a business.
