Beacon Press has continued its efforts to share knowledge with print buyers by sponsoring a seminar on the benefits of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) paper certification.

Beacon Press has continued its efforts to share knowledge with print buyers by sponsoring a seminar on the benefits of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) paper certification The FSC seminar was held at London's Royal Society of Arts and was attended by approximately 25 representatives from the agency and corporate market

Following a welcome by Beacon Press, Amy Mulkern, advisory service manager of FSC's UK Working Group opened the event with a presentation on the history of the FSC and the reasons that led to its formation.

FSC was founded in 1992 by 130 leading retailers, timber traders, forest managers and environmental and social organisations, such as Greenpeace and the WWF.

Today it has 638 members from 79 countries all of which share a common goal: to promote responsible management of the world's forests.

To be well managed, forests need to be environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial for the local communities and economically viable in the long term, added Beacon Press.

FSC's current certification activities range from forest management and chain of custody certification for the world's forests through to chain of custody certification for pulp and paper mills and FSC claims on printed materials for designers or corporate clients.

Mulkern pointed out: "FSC is the only independent international timber labelling system applicable to all forest types currently available.

The FSC label is a mark of responsible forestry and caters for complex supply chains and processing situations." She urged the attendees to talk to their existing print suppliers and get as much information about the papers used on their print jobs and to approach FSC UK with any questions.

The UK Working Group runs advisory and subscription services, as well as providing training and consultancy.

Mulkern's presentation was followed by Lee Henderson, environmental executive at James McNaughton Group (JMC).

JMC was fully certified to FSC in April 2005.

Henderson drew attention to the fact that only nine per cent of the world's forests are under any certification scheme at all.

He went on to describe the four different labels available under the FSC scheme: FSC 100 per cent, FSC recycled, FSC mixed sources and FSC mixed sources per cent recycled.

Henderson added: "FSC accredited papers are not only environmentally friendly, they can also be cost-effective.

There is a wide range of options to suit different budgets." Matt Onslow, print procurement manager at Henderson Global Investors attended the event and felt it was both informative and enlightening.

He said: "At Henderson we have already changed our house paper to FSC and we are currently looking in to sourcing FSC accredited digital papers.

I came out of the event with all my questions answered and a greater understanding of the rules and regulations surrounding FSC labelling." Richard Owers, sales and marketing director at Beacon Press, commented: "We were delighted to sponsor this seminar as part of our environmental education initiative.

Responsible paper purchasing is a key factor in minimising the environmental impact of printing.

Print buyers can be a major influence on a company's environmental policy and we are always keen to give them the latest and best information.".
