Bridge Communications has taken delivery of a Heidelberg Speedmaster SM102-10PS 10-colour press with the first Feeder Plus incorporating Cutstar reel to sheet system In being more competitive on paper prices by buying in reels and by reducing waste by cutting the paper closer to the final job size, Bridge believes it will successfully encroach into traditional web markets

Peter Ruck, joint managing director of Bridge said: "This new press will boost our capacity by 20%-25%.

With this firepower, the 60 staff company operating out of our 40,000 square foot, 24-hour site in Maldon will be able to meet their challenges ahead." He said the first job on the new press was exacting five back five work with a special corporate colour.

"We ran it at 12,000sheets per hour (sph).

We had a client fly from Scotland to pass the job with a million copies and it was passed in no time with the buyer over the moon with the match that Axiscontrol spectrophotometry was able to give sheet after sheet," said Ruck.

Quality is something of which the company very proud and it was that which secured it the Direct Mail Printer of the Year and four other top direct mail and production awards in 2003, he added.

The new SM102-10PS will handle heavier stocks than the previous model but, with Cutstar, it can also produce lighter weight work.

The Speedmaster is also very controlled in its application of powder spray and inks, which were features that were attractive to Bridge, which is environmentally aware.

"In direct mail and sales promotional print you have to be technically innovative," said Ruck, who is also father of the founder John Ruck.

"We do work with major agencies and direct with a cross section of customers, including major corporate clients who are taking a great interest in what we are developing." He continued: "We have patented products and have also been involved with a North American partner in the development of Mailer Magic, a system that will fold, glue, tip on products such as CDs and product sachets, create envelope pockets and personalise in one line.

It is a great development that brings new levels of creativity and productivity and we have spent two years involved in its research and development.".
