The BPIF has reported that its Climate Change Levy Reduction Scheme has saved printers over £4.5 million every year since 2001.

The BPIF has reported that its Climate Change Levy Reduction Scheme has saved printers over £4.5 million every year since 2001 and resulted in an eight per cent reduction in relative energy consumption.

That has meant the 160 participants in the scheme have cut carbon dioxide emissions by over 52,000 tonnes.

And due to the success of the scheme in reducing carbon dioxide emissions, UK targets have been tightened since 2001.

However, the BPIF said that it has successfully fought off the threatened five per cent tightening first imposed by DEFRA, and the printing industry will only face a three per cent tightening in 2006 and 2008.

According to the BPIF, many more companies can benefit from the scheme as they are now allowed to receive the discount for their finishing and pre-press equipment, rather than just their presses (providing those processes cause pollution).

In most cases that means they will be able to receive the full 80 per cent discount on all the energy they use.

To calculate the potential savings, companies need to look at their bills where the Climate Change Levy Charge Charge is separately identified.

If a company considers the saving is significant then the BPIF can take it step by step through the application process.

In return for the discount companies need to meet energy efficiency targets, set by DEFRA.

However if companies fail to reach the targets they do not have to pay back the discount and they are allowed to buy carbon dioxide allowances on the emissions trading market if they wish to stay in the scheme, said the BPIF.
