After spending GBP75,000 on outsourced diecutting, direct mail firm Bridge Communications has saved time and money, as well as keeping better control over quality.

And now the company has put a run of 4.5 million postcards through its new Bobst Commercial 106 diecutter, work which would otherwise have been outsourced Since installing the Commercial 106, Bridge Communications has also reduced pressure on its guillotine department

Previously much of its work involved cutting the edges of jobs, or cutting work down from B1 to B2 for diecutting on cylinder presses.

Now, edge waste is stripped by the Bobst, which can handle a full B1 sheet up to 1,060mm x 760mm.

Even though it was outsourcing so much diecutting Bridge Communications still found itself constantly overloaded in that area, largely because of the company's sales growth.

Dave Gwalter, joint managing director of Bridge Communications, said: "About 90 per cent of our work now has some element of diecutting and the jobs we were outsourcing were above and beyond the work we were able to diecut, slowly, in-house on cylinder machines." Having made the decision to take its diecutting in-house, Bridge Communications looked to Bobst and its Commercial 106 diecutter, which was launched at Ipex last year.

Gwalter added: "The Bobst name is synonymous with diecutting.

You know that you are getting the best diecutting equipment available, after all, most other diecutters are copies of Bobst machines.

Having seen some Commercial 106s in production we could see that it was going to be the perfect machine for the high speed diecutting and stripping of our B1 work." He explained that he was equally impressed with the build quality of the machine, commenting: "It's a solidly built machine and you can see the value for money in it.".
