The British Retail Consortium (BRC) will be releasing a 'Chinese Simplified' translation of its Global Standard, Food and Global Standard, Food Packaging and other Packaging Materials standard.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) will be releasing a 'Chinese Simplified' translation of its Global Standard, Food and Global Standard, Food Packaging and other Packaging Materials standard.

The Chinese Simplified translated standard is for companies that deal with speakers of either the Cantonese, Mandarin or Taiwanese languages, enabling them to work more effectively with their suppliers.

The globally recognised Global Standard - Food helps retailers to make food purchases with confidence from product manufacturers and compliance with the BRC and IoP Packaging Standard sets a benchmark for best practice across the packaging industry, said BRC.

BRC head of technical services, Kevin Swoffer, said: "As the global reach of the BRC Standards increases, we have recognised the need to publish appropriate Global Standards in languages that will assist suppliers outside the UK.

The publishing of the Chinese Simplified version is a significant development as it extends best practice into the growing Far East market." The Standard is most applicable to manufacturers of food packaging for retailers' own labelled products and branded products.

Manufacturers have an obligation to put in to place appropriate systems and controls to ensure the suitability of their packaging for safe food use.
