With UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown's new emphasis on self-regulation the Coatings Care Audit Tool, has been launched at the right time.

With UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown's new emphasis on self-regulation and the introduction of a 'risk-based' inspection regime, the Coatings Care Audit Tool, from the British Coatings Federation (BCF) has been launched at the right time The Coatings Care Programme is an international initiative, endorsed by both the International Paint and Printing Ink Council )IPPIC) and the European Confederation of Coatings Manufacturers (ECCM)

The scheme is organised in the UK by BCF.

Already well-established, with over 600 chief executives in 20 countries having signed up, Coatings Care promotes best practice in four vital areas of responsibility - manufacturing, transport and distribution, product stewardship and the community, all of which are key to self-regulation, said BCF.

The new Audit Tool provides a simple to use but comprehensive set of audit checklists that enable sites to continuously monitor their performance, enabling them to identify best practice and ensure legal compliance.

The Audit Tool, which is available in hard copy or electronic format (to BCF members only), has been designed to complement existing guidance and encompasses all Coatings Care Management Practices as well as linking to Coatings Care Guidance Online (CC-GO).

The tables in the Audit Tool have been reviewed by Coatings Care co-ordinators.

In addition, the BCF Coatings Care Committee meets regularly to review the programme and propose improvements where applicable, as well as collating and surveying results of company performance indicators, which are produced through member companies' self assessment procedures.

One company that has used the process is Manor Coating Systems.

Manor's John Bowman, who was in charge of the implementation commented: "The Audit Tool was easy and straightforward to use, it needed minimal clarification, caused minimal disruption and taught us a lot about our own company, highlighting some areas for improvement but also showing us areas where we were already performing well." BCF chief executive officer Moira McMillan commented: "The importance of the Audit Tool is that it helps make self assessment factual rather than a matter of judgement and it is, therefore, exactly the type of process it appears the Chancellor will be looking for in his drive against over-regulation, which we certainly applaud.".
