The British Coatings Federation's (BCF) Printing Ink Product Name Register enables printing ink companies to determine whether intended product names conflict with those already in use.

The British Coatings Federation's (BCF) Printing Ink Product Name Register enables printing ink companies to determine whether intended product names conflict with those already in use.

The register lists product names assigned to companies, the intended uses of the named products and their date of registration.

In that way the register avoids the replication of product names and any consequent confusion in the market-place or potential disputes between ink suppliers, said BCF.

It provides a formal record, establishing the date of first use of a name and can also be used as evidence of use of a name in the case of a Trade Mark dispute or challenges.

The 56-page document lists over 2000 names ranging from A-Line, Accolade and Ace, through Mattador and Matterhorn to Woodtone, Wypit and Zephtex.

The register does not, however, have legal or statutory status, added BCF, as it is purely a voluntary industry scheme, offering a service and support to printing ink suppliers in the UK.

The register is open to all printing ink suppliers in the UK, whether or not in membership of the BCF.
