The British Association for Print and Communication's (BAPC) conference hosted USA business 'guru' Jeff Tobe on his first visit to the UK.

The British Association for Print and Communication's (BAPC) conference hosted USA business 'guru' Jeff Tobe on his first visit to the UK.

Tobe focused on issues facing managers and owners of print businesses and provided hints, tips and suggestions on how to add creativity to their businesses.

Nigel Risner provided a presentation on the human issues of running a business.

There were also four workshops covering such issues as marketing, adding value and guides on motivating both staff and customers.

In addition delegates heard about the future of telephonic communication.

Stuart Mason of the Ink Shop provided not only an insight in to his business but revealed some of his future plans.

He also took time to criticise those within the industry who exuded a feeling of doom and gloom and encouraged everyone to take on a more positive attitude.

Mason's presentation was followed by another four workshops looking at the issues of public relations, time management, cash flow and management information systems.

Jeff Tobe then returned to the stage and provided a talk on marketing and sales.

The BAPC's awards ceremony saw Duraweld appointed as supplier of the year and Presstek's 3 DI - E press selected as product of the year.

Both awards were presented following a vote by printers attending the conference.

The association announced the finalists for its business of the year award and The Direct Printing Company, Repropoint and Zap Digital Print all received certificates acknowledging their achievements.

Zap Digital Print won the top award, which was accepted by the company's managing director, Dave Brooks.

The BAPC's former deputy chairman and now special adviser to the association, Freddie Kienzler was made an honorary life member.

Tony Honnor, BAPC association director, commented: "We had a feeling that the 2006 conference would be good, but had not prepared ourselves for the extent of the praise and congratulations we have received from delegates who were printers and those form the supply side of the industry.

We certainly have set ourselves a major task if, in 2007, we can equal this year's achievement.".
