PDF Document Archival Software Is Future Proof

A Callas software GmbH product story
Edited by the Printingtalk editorial team Mar 5, 2008

Callas Software, the developer of PDF systems has re-aligned its PDFapilot document archival range of products.

The range maintains PDFapilot as the plug-in for Adobe Acrobat and PDFapilot Server, the automated production software both for checking and making files PDF/A compliant.

Callas Software said it is currently demonstrating its latest products on stand 551 at the AIIM/On Demand show until March 6 in Boston (USA).

The company claimed that PDFapilot is the easiest way to make document archives future-proof from within Adobe Acrobat, whilst PDFapilot Server provides automated PDF archiving for high-volume document workflows.

Callas commented that as electronic documents have become the norm for information exchange and storage, a robust archiving strategy is now an essential requirement for any organisation.

Based on Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF), PDF/A is an international standard (ISO 19005-1) created to answer that need.

PDF/A is said to ensure that documents archived today will be completely future-proof.

All files created according to the PDF/A standard are reproducible on screen, paper and ready for future technology whilst omitting features unsuitable for long-term archiving.

To make documents PDF/A compliant, Callas said that PDFapilot uses the complete set of checks and fixes available in the industry.

PDFapilot Server 3 is said to integrate in new or existing document environments, either through command line interface, or by using the more visual automation platforms Fullswitch, or Powerswitch from Callas's technology partner Gradual Software.

Callas Software said it has established core-technology around PDF verification and correction.

As the developer of Adobe Acrobat's pre-flight functions, the technology was recognised by the inventors of PDF.

Callas's founder, Olaf Drummer, is an active member in various industry associations, such as the PDF/A competence centre.

He is also co-author of an education publication on PDF/A: PDF/A in a Nutshell.
