Canon UK has claimed to have strengthened its variable data system capability through an agreement with digital imaging technology company Bitstream and its Pageflex systems.

The deal is now said to give users of Canon's digital production equipment, such as the Imagepress C7000VP, the ability to provide customers with customised communications through variable data printing (VDP) and web-to-print store fronts The system is also claimed to allow for cross-media marketing campaigns, such as personalised URLs, microsites and HTML email

Bitstream, which said it first introduced variable data software 10 years ago, is now an alliance partner within the Canon Workflow Programme.

According to Canon, the agreement means that its UK customers have access to Bitstream's Pageflex portfolio of products.

The Bitstream range includes Pageflex Persona, a desktop variable data application that is said to generate variable communications in print and HTML email formats.

Pageflex Storefront is described as an online portal that can be customised to allow customers to order personalised documents from a branded store front.

Ben Milford, head of professional at Canon Business Solutions, said: "Print doesn't operate in a vacuum - it's increasingly likely to be part of a cross-media marketing campaign.

Bitstream's Pageflex is a welcome addition to the burgeoning Canon Workflow Programme.

as it gives Imagepress users the ability to offer integrated marketing campaigns and secure new revenue opportunities.

Return on investment is the principal consideration for any marketing director, which makes personalisation all the more attractive as it can increase response rates by a fifth and increase overall revenue by nearly a quarter." Bitstream's chief executive officer, Anna Chagnon, commented: "This agreement with Canon gives us the opportunity to increase our market share.

The Imagepress products provide exceptional image quality and are perfectly suited to provide cutting-edge personalised print campaigns.

However, the ability to use Pageflex products to also supply other elements of a campaign, such as personalised URLs, microsites and HTML email.

They transform print specialists in to multi-media communications providers." The Canon Workflow Programme includes alliances and partnerships with a number of suppliers, including, Objectif Lune, Directsmile, EFI and X-Rite.

The programme also includes exclusive software, such as the JDF-compliant workflow software, iW Prepress Manager (iWPPM), which was developed over a three-year period and has a total of 82 patents, as well as NT-ware's print management system, Uniflow Output Manager.
