New Laminate Is Eco-Friendly OPP Alternative

A Celloglas product story
Edited by the Printingtalk editorial team Jun 5, 2007

Cellogreen AE is an eco-print laminate that is claimed to be a new environmentally-friendly alternative to OPP from Celloglas.

Celloglas said it has introduced Cellogreen AE to help protect print, pritner's profits and the environment, in response to the government's call for commitment to protecting natural resources.

An over lamination film and adhesive that is said to provide all the benefits of OPP, whilst being sustainable and recyclable, Cellogreen AE is also said to provide simplified waste handling and reduced disposal costs.

CelloGreen AE is currently exclusive to Celloglasand, is now available nationwide and can be ordered from all 13 Celloglas manufacturing sites.

The first client to have adopted the new film, Marcus Goss, print manager at Wolseley, said: "We saw the benefits of this product as soon as it was introduced to us and we are proud to be the first firm to have taken up Cellogreen AE.

The use of this product on our brochures fits alongside our sustainability objectives and our overall CSR responsibility and we are advising our customers that the laminates are recyclable, in the hope that they will then dispose of them responsibly.

He added: "The fact that the end results looks no different is also very appealing as it means there is no compromise on quality, which is of course key.

Using a film and adhesive that are suitable for processing in a normal re-pulping system, any waste or side trims can be handled with general printer waste, collected and sent for recycling, saving time sorting and separating waste on the shop floor and reducing the amount of materials sent to landfill, said Celloglas.

Celloglas added that being environmentally-friendly through using Cellogreen AE will not come at a great cost to printers, as Cellogla's partners have committed to ensuring they keep the premium low, contrary to popular belief that 'green products' are sold at much higher price points.

Steve Middleton, sales and marketing director at Celloglas, said: " We are very excited by this product as it offers our customers the chance to get ahead of the game.

Things will have to change within our industry and the Government's view that 'the polluter pays' will see increasing legislation and rising costs associated with landfill in the months and years ahead.

He explained: "We're offering clients the opportunity to adopt new practices now, with a product that doesn't compromise on quality or appearance - in fact it looks identical - but shows their commitment to sustainability, and saves them money.

We spent quite some time researching industry reaction before launching this and we're pleased to say for most it's an easy option.

With refined wood pulp at the heart of this film, the environmental issues are checked at every stage, said Celloglas.

The timber used is harvested from SFC managed forests where full consideration is given to wildlife, the eco system and the landscape in which the trees are grown, whilst an awareness of the current atmospheric issues ensures that emissions are controlled during manufacture through the implementation of a fully closed system.

In comparison OPP, with its source rooted in petroleum, has taken 35 million years and significant processing and distillation before it can be laminated once, discarded and ploughed in to the subsoil as landfill forever, added the company.

Further advantages are also inherent, as Cellogreen AE is classified in the paper and board category, in view of its cellulosic base, therefore its levy is lower than other thermoplastic films, which are classified as plastics.

Cultivated responsibly for 25 years, harvested and processed in a low impact system, from a sustainable resource, after use CelloGreen AE can then be recycled, to feed back in to the ecology system.

With the base film used in Cellogreen manufacture having been accredited with DIN EN 13432 the product is now internationally recognised for its compostability and biodegradation standards, explained Celloglas.
