Security printing specialist Checkprint has given a student a flying start with his business management and enterprise degree course.

Security printing specialist Checkprint has given a student a flying start with his business management and enterprise degree course.

Checkprint has awarded a scholarship to Thomas Moore (22) who has just started his BA (Hons) Business Management and Enterprise course at Leicester Business School, De Montfort University (DMU) in the UK.

The company is a member of the Tall Group of Companies which provides modern printing apprenticeships at its Runcorn division, Tall Security Print.

"This is the second year we have offered this scholarship which aims to support young, talented entrepreneurs," explained Martin Ruda, managing director of the Tall Group.

"Our company is the leading provider of special cheques and credits in the country and we have developed award-winning printing solutions through innovative software and hardware packages.

This scholarship reflects our commitment to working in partnership with other organisations and individuals to put something back into the community," he added.

Checkprint has presented Moore with a cheque for GBP250 as part of the scholarship and has also awarded a GBP50 book token to runner-up Karl Bassett (19) from Birmingham, who is in the first year of his BA (Hons) Business Enterprise course at DMU.

Moore, who comes from Coalville in Leicestershire, is pleased to have earned Checkprint's backing and is looking forward to carrying out work experience projects at the company's premises in Hinckley, Leicestershire.

He said: "I was surprised when I discovered I had won the scholarship.

It was great that the judges liked my ideas.

Obviously the extra money will help while I am studying but I am really looking forward to spending time at Checkprint and learning about the business." To qualify for the scholarship, students were asked to submit a 500-word essay entitled 'Why is entrepreneurship so important in today's society?'.

Judges looked for an appreciation of entrepreneurship and an enthusiasm for enterprise, an awareness of current business affairs as well as motivation, commitment, ambition and excellent writing skills.

The judging panel, which included representatives of the Leicester Business School and Checkprint, interviewed shortlisted candidates before naming the winner.

"It is so important, in today's market, that links between academia and industry are encouraged.

This scholarship is an excellent example of how universities and business can join forces to the greater benefit of students and local industry," said Dr Robert Webber, senior lecturer in enterprise and entrepreneurship at DMUls Leicester Business School.
