"We are a successful, growing and innovative company and we are proud that we not only support our local community but also that 80 per cent of our staff live within a five-mile radius of our Hinckley operation.
On a more personal note, I feel honoured to have been shortlisted in the entrepreneur of the year category." Checkprint is involved in a range of activities in the local community from 'Right to Read' projects, helping children at Leicestershire primary schools with their reading, to a scholarship offered to business students at Leicester's De Montfort University.
It also supports a young enterprise scheme at William Bradford Community College in neighbouring Earl Shilton and offers work experience opportunities to both university and college students.
"More than a quarter of our staff are involved in community related activities with hundreds of hours of time donated to these causes throughout the year," explained Ruda.
"We have also been involved in a series of charity fund-raising events with the company in many cases matching any funds raised by staff to boost donations." He added: "The success of our business has not diminished our recognition of the vital part the community plays in our ability to succeed." Ruda is chairman of the De Montfort University 'campus enterprise opportunities' advisory board and has been singled out for praise by the director of Flying Start National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship.
Lorna Collins, who is also director of postgraduate programmes at the Institute for Entrepreneurship at the University of Southampton, said: "I meet many successful entrepreneurs whose business results have brought them to national attention.
Few can match Martin Ruda's grasp of the true essence of entrepreneurship and his ability to clearly convey this to those around him.
Entrepreneurship can be taught and it is from people like Martin Ruda that it can be learned." Judges will now visit all finalists before choosing a winner in all seven categories of the awards.
The winners will be announced on April 7.
Ruda commented: "We are looking forward to the judges' visit and the awards night.
We are recognised throughout the UK as the leading provider of secure print services, innovative cheque handling software and electronic document distribution systems.
Whilst this recognition is clearly important to us as a business, it would be great honour to have our success acknowledged by the Leicestershire Business Awards judges.".
