Clarifoil, the makers of cellulose acetate films for carton windows and lamination, have issued a free leaflet answering frequently asked questions about recyclability.

As a woodpulp based product, Clarifoil is categorised by the UK Environment Agency with paper and board for recovery purposes, leading to lower environmental levies on Clarifoil compared with plastics and mixed wastes.

Clarifoil is currently in the process of applying for EN 13432 accreditation confirming its biodegradability and compostability.

Tests by PIRA have shown that repulped cartonboard laminated with Clarifoil can be incorporated in to high quality recycled products, such as writing paper.

Clarifoil's commercial director Gordon Willins said: "The leaflet highlights cellulose acetate film's excellent environmental credentials - trees from managed, renewable forestry planted for pulp make a positive contribution to counter global warming.

Clarifoil's moisture transmission ensures the attractive presentation and improved shelf life of many foodstuffs, an important factor at a time of growing unease over the quantity of spoiled packaged food product being tipped to landfill." He continued: "Clarifoil offers the clear environmental advantages of a naturally based product without compromising quality and performance.

Due to Clarifoil's well established market position, the strength of its environmental case can sometimes be overlooked by packaging users searching for environmentally responsible packaging".
