Barcode Label Printers Have Computer
Communication

Barcode label printers from Citizen Systems Europe are now available with a Virtual Communications Port (VCOM) facility.

The VCOM function is currently available with Citizen's CLP 521, CLP 621, CLP 631 and CL-S700 printers, making the technology suitable for a range of applications, said the company Citizen Systems claimed that VOM eliminates the complex, time consuming and costly programming required to allow computers to communicate effectively with printers using USB drivers

VCOM enables existing IT systems to be adapted for use with the latest printing technology, which makes it possible to optimise productivity without investing in programming and new hardware.

According to Citizen Systems, with PC hardware now typically supplied with USB ports only, rather than RS232 serial ports, programming is usually required to achieve effective bi-directional communication between PCs and printers, especially with legacy applications.

Whilst it may be possible to obtain basic printer information on screen, more detailed information on the status of the printers is no longer obtainable without a considerable amount of time, money and resources.

VCOM is said to overcome that problem by using a function in the printer and small software driver on the PC to create a virtual RS232 port on the PC.

That enables the programmer to use traditional and well-known methods in applications, such as Visual Basic 6 (VB6) to talk to the printer, enabling the detailed level of information that could previously be exchanged between PC and printer to be retained.

As a result, corrective action can be taken on warning messages, minimising downtime and streamlining processes. Request a free brochure from Citizen Systems Europe ...
