Fine debut for image art
Western Computer has installed the UK's first Stylus Pro 9600 large format printer for fine art reproduction.
Managing director, Peter Nicholls, has led JKN's rise as a leading supplier of digitally printed graphics.
The company came from humble beginnings in 1988 with a small unit, little equipment and just two staff, manufacturing traditional signage - trading as Sign Post, Preston.
Although small in number, in those early days, strong disciplines and procedures were always followed, providing customers with expert advice and seamless services, produced efficiently at a high level of high quality and on time.

Colourgen, the UK distributor of large format digital printers, has announced that its loyalty discount offer for current Epson wide format printers has been extended to March 31 2004.
That philosophy has been adopted and retained throughout the growth of JKN.
Nicholls said: "I have very strong beliefs that if a job is worth doing it is worth doing properly - easy to say but not always to carry out.
We do not let our levels slip, our standards must be high because if they are not, somebody else is always waiting in the wings to pick up the pieces." Nicholls' philosophy has been carried through into his business strategy, which is to implement the very best technology and employ the very best staff.
He explained: "It is all well and good if I personally have strong beliefs but if I hadn't surrounded myself with staff that feel the same, it would have been impossible to see it through.
I believe I have the strongest team there is to run our business, all composed, all confident and all qualified to provide the best possible support for our many and varied clients." Shaun Bennett, a senior manager at JKN Digital explained his company's path into the digital market: "Towards the end of the 90s, the industry was calling out for a good direct-to-vinyl printer for outdoor use.
At that time, the best around was the Arizona and we purchased two of those.
These have served us well and we have built up an excellent reputation and a strong trade and direct customer base with these printers.
However, the market is now demanding more quality in terms of image output and with no clear upgrade path for the Arizona, we decided to look at what else was available." JKN has had a good long term relationship with City and West End Solutions and it was their recommendation to look at the new Seiko Colorpainter 64S being launched in the UK by Colourgen at Sign UK.
"Just looking at the quality of the output from the Colorpainter, compared to the cost of the machine, really made it an easy choice.
We did look at other printers, including the Rockhopper, but the Colorpainter stood out head and shoulders above the rest.
Our reputation within the trade is built on the quality and reliability of our service so in almost all areas of our business we have at least two machines.
Since they arrived, both the Colorpainters have been running at virtually full capacity the whole time, including unattended overnight runs.
Everyone in contact with the printers in this company can't speak highly enough of them," said Bennett.
The first Colorpainter was installed in April this year and was soon followed by another.
He explained that the company had taken on the Seiko's for external work but had found that, thanks to the image quality, they are also suitable for some indoor work which gives the company even greater capacity.
JKN has also benefited from the Colorpainter's reliability and ease of use.
"The ColorPainter requires remarkably little maintenance.
We can put a 50-metre roll on and leave it running unattended overnight with no worries at all.
Also, unlike the Arizonas, we can start using the Colorpainters as soon as we get in, not spend half an hour cleaning the heads before we can start.
We haven't needed much support with the printers as they have been so reliable, but the support we have received from Colourgen has been excellent," added Bennett.
The Colorpainter allows JKN to print onto a variety of vinyls for short and long term outdoor prints as well as body wrap material for vehicle livery.
"One of our most impressive jobs with the new printers has been to completely cover a tram on Blackpool promenade.
The sheer vibrancy of the colours really makes the tram stand out, which is exactly the effect our customers wanted," said Bennett.
The Colorpainter 64S, available exclusively from authorised Colourgen resellers, is claimed to offer true 720 dots per inch (dpi) printing at 16 square metres per hour (approximately two-five times faster than competing models) directly on to uncoated media such as vinyl and banner stock.
The printer utilises a new type of ink featuring an expanded gamut and less solvents with a claimed outdoor durability for up to three years.
The Seiko ColorPainter 64S has a recommended retail price of £22,950.
