Colourgen has announced that it has exclusive UK distribution for the new MacDermid Colorspan 5400UV series of flatbed UV-curable inkjet printers.

Colourgen has announced that it has exclusive UK distribution for the new MacDermid Colorspan 5400UV series of flatbed UV-curable inkjet printers.

The 5400UV is a series of four 1,200 dots per inch (dpi) machines based on a new design.

The UK market will get its first public view of the new printers on the Colourgen stand at Sign UK 2007.

Targeted at small to medium-sized sign and print shops, the printers are said to combine the print quality typical of an aqueous thermal inkjet printer, with the outdoor durability of a solvent printer, together with the media versatility and cost savings of a UV-curable inkjet printer.

The range consists of four models - the Colorspan 5440UV (four-colour), Colorspan 5445UV (2 x four-colour), Colorspan 5460UV (six-colour) and the Colorspan 5465UV (2 x six-colour).

All four models have a 54-inch (137cm) print width and feature a set of integrated tables that fold up and can extend outward to accommodate rigid media in excess of eight feet (244cm) in length.

The tables fold down and out of the way for printing on roll-fed media, whilst conserving precious floor space, said Colourgen.

Jeff Biggs, Colourgen's managing director, commented: "The Colorspan 5400uv series of printers provides unrivalled flexibility at a very competitive price.

It enables 1,200 dots per inch to apparent 1,800dpi image quality for the most demanding indoor POP applications and has an outdoor display life that competes favourably with solvent printers.

Its innovative flatbed and roll-fed design,, as well as its ability to print directly on to nearly any material up to 254mm thick, makes it the next logical step for those needing to upgrade their printing capabilities but wanting to avoid the problems and high costs associated with mild solvent and eco-solvent printers." The Colorspan 5400UV series uses the latest variable drop piezoelectric printheads.

Each industrial-quality, extended-life printhead can eject variable-sized micro droplets to achieve addressable resolutions of 600dpi x 300dpi, 600dpi x 600dpi and 1,200dpi x 600dpi, said Colourgen.

The 5460UV and 5465UV six-colour models achieve even higher apparent image quality of up to 1,800dpi, added the company.

Said to be designed for operator simplicity, they use a patent-pending, self-maintaining printhead service station that maintains the health of the jets and printheads whilst idle or in service.

The design is said to eliminate any need to manually clean the printheads and ensures that the printer is always ready to print, even after an extended idle time.

The Colorspan 5400UV series comes in four models and will be available in the UK from authourised Colourgen resellers.
