The first HP DesignJet 10000s system in the UK is up and running and supporting a host of applications including the National Gallery

The printer is the first HP DesignJet to break the 100in barrier at 104in wide Supplied by Sheffield based DCP Systems and installed at Leeds based Electronic Printing Services, EPS, the DesignJet 10000s boasts super-wide format, low solvent ink durability for super-wide signs, banners, billboards, wall murals and window and vehicle graphics, as well as unlined mesh, delivering striking, vivid colours in resolutions up to 720x720dpi

One of two beta test sites for the DesignJet 10000s, the other being in Barcelona, Electronic Printing Services took on the task of evaluating the machine because it needed a super-wide inkjet to produce at the very highest quality and to be first to venture into that size with super quality arena.

"We scoured the world looking for a solution", says Steve Farley of EPS, "and we found exactly what we needed on our doorstep, with nothing else to compete".

"Through DCP Systems and the longstanding relationship we have, we were able to beta test one of the first two machines produced and subsequently buy the first non-beta production 10000s which proved to be exactly what we needed".

As with all new developments there were a few teething problems but now the machine is on stream and producing the quality needed with added benefits of dual roll capability that also enables smaller media rolls to be printed, maximising productivity and production flexibility.

"The 10000s produces stunning quality", says Steve Farley, "with exhilarating colour vibrancy and pin sharp accuracy".

"And so we came to the attention of the National Gallery".

With a view to wooing visitors to the National Gallery in London's Trafalgar Square, to see the genuine article, the institution hit on the idea of a Grand Tour, displaying life size digital reproductions, complete with replica frames, of famous paintings ranging from Da Vinci and Constable to Caravaggio, Rubens and Botticelli, around the streets of central London.

Using the 10000s and Epiflex, a new vinyl media, EPS output 44 art treasure reproductions.

With laminating, the prints boast durability for up to three years outdoors, resistant to fading and water, although according to Steve Farley, "Lab tests suggest the prints may still look the same after a decade".

On quality of the prints, Danielle Chidlow, the National Gallery's project designer commented that members of the public thought that real works of art had been posted on the streets.

HP's DesignJet 10000s features sophisticated media handling, enabling dual-sided printing, dual-roll printing and printing on unlined mesh via six heavy duty piezo print heads.

The machine easily handles economical, uncoated media for lower running costs and greater return on investment.

"At EPS, we can satisfy a greater range of customer demands for outdoor and indoor durable signage with the DesignJet 10000s", says Steve Farley.

"For the first time we can compete with screen printers both on price and durability".

One litre, hot swappable HP 790 ink cartridges make for cartridge changeover without interrupting a print job.

A new super-heavy duty take-up reel supports rolls weighing up to 110kg and two preloaded rolls enable side by side printing.

When combined with an optional 104in high speed dryer, DesignJet 10000s is able to can produce long, unattended print runs at maximum print speeds.

High speed printing with its six heavy duty piezo print heads and low solvent colour inks delivers rich, saturated colour, says HP, produces excellent lightfastness for outdoor signage, resisting fading for up to three years.

The durable, affordable prints resist scratching, cracking and smearing, adds the company, even when using economical uncoated media such as HP's universal scrim banner without laminating.

Three user controllable integrated heaters make for fast print drying and an optional high speed dryer leaves jobs ready for winding, finishing or final use straight off the printer.

An optional air purifying system is designed to reduce workplace VOCs in demanding production environments and an optional liner roll accessory enables direct printing on economical unlined mesh material.

HP also provides simple and convenient cleaning and maintenance kits to ease the chore of daily printer maintenance.

As well as the standard HP RIP, DesignJet 10000s optionally runs on Onyx PosterShop 7.0 and is also RIP compatible with PosterJet, SA International, Wasatch, Caldera, ColorGate, Shiraz and more.
