Paper Merchant Gains Forest Care Certification

A Denmaur Papers Plc product story
Edited by the Printingtalk editorial team Feb 26, 2007

Denmaur Papers, an independent UK paper merchanting group has successfully attained Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

Denmaur Papers, an independent UK paper merchanting group and its subsidiary, specialist paper supplier Media Paper Management, have both successfully attained Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) accreditation.

That means that both companies have now successfully achieved accreditation to both Forest Stewardship Council and PEFC certification systems, becoming one of the few independent paper merchant groups in the UK to have attained dual certification, said Denmaur.

Peter Sommerville, Denmaur's marketing director, said: "We have witnessed a growing interest from publishers and users wishing to demonstrate their commitment to the sourcing sustainable forest products.

It just makes entire sense for an independent merchant to be able to pass on the chain of custody where at all possible, allowing publishers to use the recognised logos in their publications.

Of course, this only addresses one part of the environmental question, with recycling and carbon usage now high on the agenda." The fact that both Denmaur and Media Paper Management have achieved accreditation to both certification systems means that both company's print and publishing customers can be assured that any paper bearing either certification mark has been sourced from sustainable and well-managed forests, he added.

Denmaur became FSC accredited in last February, whilst Media Paper Management was awarded its accreditation last November.

The dual accreditation is part of Denmaur Papers and Media Paper Management's commitment to minimise the group's impact on the environment, added the company.

As part of Denmaur and Media Paper Management's continuing environmental improvements, both companies are taking advice to set realistic targets to become carbon neutral, which will make Denmaur Papers and Media Paper Management the first merchants in their sector to achieve this environmental landmark, the company believes.

Doug Jessop, managing director of Media Paper Management, said: "We are no longer satisfied with simply keeping up with the industry standard when it comes to the environment.

Wwe want to be pro-active and innovative on the carbon footprint issue and we see setting a target to achieve carbon neutrality as the first meaningful step." Achieving carbon neutral status means reducing CO2 emissions from an operation, or activity to net zero.

Carbon emissions are counter balanced by carbon savings and by tackling their respective carbon exposures, Denmaur Papers and Media Paper Management are demonstrating their environmental stewardship of their respective businesses.
