Delphax Technologies, of Minneapolis (USA) is a global provider of high-speed digital printing and publishing systems.

It has increasingly become a major force in the global market of cut-sheet and continuous feed monochrome printers since Check Technology Corporation and Delphax Systems joined forces in 2001.

Check Technology had been pioneering the use of electron beam imaging (EBI) since its formation in 1981 and, having worked closely with Delphax Systems for many years, it acquired the company from Xerox in December 2001.

The acquisition and name change to Delphax Technologies, resulted in a huge range of benefits for the new group and its customers, which led to an on-going growth and success that continues today.

With some 4,000 machines in operation in more than 60 countries, Delphax is a key supplier to a wide range of sectors including direct mail, publishers, in-house data and document centres, financial and security printers, service bureaux and transactional printers.

"The introduction of the new CR2000 takes us into even more markets because the speed, quality and versatility closes the gap with industries served by traditional litho printers," said UK managing director Ian Jaggard.

The Delphax systems are designed and manufactured at its plant in Canada and sold and supported via its offices in the US, the UK and France.

The company employs over 400 people and a significant number work in research, development and manufacturing.

Electron beam imaging is Delphax's proprietary technology and the company is the exclusive provider of this technology to the printing industry.

The EBI technology is incorporated into both the cut sheet and continuous feed monochrome products.

There are several models within the cut-sheet printer range, including the Imaggia and Checktronic.

Each of them handles individual pre-cut sheets of paper and is designed to serve a range of markets that require multiple base stock sources or variable overprinting on pre-printed stock.

Like their continuous-feed brothers the cut-sheet printers are designed to provide high running speeds and output quality.

For example, the Imaggia II prints resolutions of 600 x 600 dpi at speeds up to 300 (8.5" x 11") pages a minute, while its paper handling is unique amongst cut-sheet digital printers.

"The cut sheet printers are a logical choice where print volumes are not large enough to justify the continuous feed process.

All the cut-sheet solutions offer flexible feeding and collation in order to handle the maximum range of paper substances, weights and sizes.

The combination of cut-sheet and continuous feed models means that we can provide customers with the right solution for their monochrome print requirements, enabling them to produce print at a low cost per copy," said Jaggard.

Companies today, regardless of whether they're producing direct mail, pharmaceutical packaging, inserts or financial documents all want a quick turnaround of work combined with low running costs and high quality output, he added.

There is a move throughout the industry towards digital printing, and Delphax equipment offers a unique combination of the above features, backed by excellent and flexible after-sales support, he believes.

"Our policy of forming partnerships with industry leading data integration experts, material providers and finishing equipment specialists significantly extends the choice available to customers.

The strategy has paid off, with orders received from customers and markets that are new to us and existing customers placing orders for additional printers," concluded Jaggard.

Turnover for the group in 2003 was up 10.5% compared to 2002.
