The first user of Screen's Riteportal customer artwork submission technology launched at drupa is Van Beeck Drukkerij in Turnhout (Belgium) Guy Van Beeck, the company owner, will upgrade his existing year-old Screen Trueflow workflow management system to the latest version 3.0 and has chosen Riteportal to help customers to submit print-ready files from their own systems

"We have been testing this system in partnership with Fransen Drukkerij, a DTP specialist company in nearby Dessel that already sends a lot of job files to us.

We have talked to our other customers and they are also interested in using Riteportal.

About 90 per cent of customers send files through the Internet, so it would benefit many of them," explained Van Beeck.

Fransen uses the Riteportal software to create and automatically upload validated certified PDFs that comply with specifications set by Van Beeck, so when the files arrive both sides can be confident that they will output properly.

An additional installation of the complementary Ritetransfer software will soon allow unattended background uploading of files automatically to Van Beeck's Riteportal server.

Van Beeck is a commercial colour printer with two MAN Roland presses, a four-colour Roland 300 and a two-colour 200.

Guy Van Beeck set up the company 15 years ago, and now employs seven people.

"We moved to CTP a year ago with a Screen Platerite 4100 B2 platesetter and a Trueflow 2.0 workflow management system.

We've been very happy with Trueflow because it's so easy to use," he said.

The new Trueflow 3 upgrade and Riteportal are part of Screen's Trueflownet suite of products, introduced at Drupa in May.

Riteportal is designed to simplify the complete sequence of PDF creation, pre-flight, certification, encryption, and delivery of files into a simple 'click-and-print' process from the customer's desktop said Screen.

It eliminates the problems often associated with bad PDFs, such as incorrect Distiller profile settings and missing fonts.

Screen believes it is simple for the customer to use Riteportal, because it just appears as a 'virtual printer' on the system.

Documents are 'printed' directly to Riteportal's print driver module, which then does everything else, including distilling to PDF with pre-determined profiles, pre-flighting, certification and (assuming the pre-flight is clear), uploading to Van Beeck's Riteportal server.

When they arrive they are automatically placed into pre-determined hot folders so print jobs get onto the press with fewer delays and results are guaranteed.

Riteportal is also said to integrate easily with Trueflow 3.0.

It can optionally create PDF/X-1a print-ready files and can also produce JDF job tickets that can in turn be transmitted to a management information system (MIS), although Van Beeck is so far not using this option.

The customer end component of Riteportal uses the Enfocus code library to create certified PDFs with additional Trueflow-specific information, ensuring that the files integrate easily with Trueflow at the receiving end.

The certification process embeds complete details of the PDF creator plus a copy of the original pre-flight report into the PDF file itself, where downstream processes can read them.

The certificate stays with the PDF file throughout its life and can be used to track changes, identify who did them, and return to earlier versions.

The certificate also acts as proof that the PDF was created to the profile specified by Van Beeck.

The pre-flight checks are based on profiles and action lists set up by Van Beeck.

The profiles are used to determine which potential problems trigger a failure, which just display a warning in the report and which are ignored.

Riteportal can automatically fix some common errors in the PDF, such as RGB colours or hairlines said Screen.

If a file fails the check with a problem that cannot be fixed automatically, the user can view a report that explains the problems and where they appear in the job, and how to fix them.

Riteportal also handles the file upload process automatically.

Van Beeck and Fransen use this system 'live' at present, so the PDFs are created and uploaded via ADSL in a single process.

The planned addition of Ritetransfer will allow more of a batch uploading process, where PDFs can be created by the Riteportal client and stored, then sent in groups, for instance at the end of the day.

The Ritetransfer client performs file transfer to the printer's Riteportal server, with automatic file compression and decompression, in the background without interrupting other activities.

File transfer techniques allow automatic recovery and completion if the transmission is interrupted.

Customers and printers both automatically receive an email mail notification once the job has been successfully transferred.

The software features an automatic update capability that lets the printer automatically issue clients with the latest job ticket forms, profiles and software patches.

With the completion of the Riteportal and Ritetransfer installations, Van Beeck plans to offer automated PDF submission to all his customers, an arrangement that will benefit both sides by boosting efficiency while cutting errors.
