Edmonton B3 commercial printer The Print Unit has increased productivity by up to 25 per cent by bringing chemical-free platemaking in-house.

Edmonton B3 commercial printer The Print Unit has increased productivity by up to 25 per cent by bringing chemical-free platemaking in-house.

The company has installed a Screen Platerite 4300 with Trueflow 3 workflow and Flatworker imposition software but without a plate processor.

The Print Unit's managing director, Fady Gremesty, said: "It's made a huge difference to how we work.

It has given us flexibility and independence.

We used to outsource all our plates, then the Platerite was installed and we were producing our own within a few hours.

Using our own plates means we can shuffle jobs around and change priority.

The minder never has to wait for plates." As space is at a premium at The Print Unit, Fady decided on a processless system.

Gremesty added: "Our sister company CTP London has been using Screen's Platerite 8100 for three years and we were extremely impressed with the plates provided.

We are one of the first companies in the UK to use Kodak's Thermal Direct processless plates and we are achieving 12-14 plates per hour with all the advantages of no processor and nothing to clean or maintain." The thermal system will supply a six-colour Heidelberg SM52 producing a variety of work for the NHS as well general commercial work for local businesses.
