Financial Sector Printer's New CTP Speeds Response

Tunbridge Wells (UK) commercial printer Mastercolour has invested in its computer-to-plate equipment with a Screen Platerite 8100, complete with Trueflow Server 2, Trap Editor and Spekta screening.

The Platerite, which was supplied by NCS Integrated Solutions, will complement a newly installed six-colour KBA press.

Mastercolour, which specialises in full-colour corporate brochures for the financial sector, is already noticing an improvement in its turn-around times.

The company investigated a number of options before deciding on the Screen system.

Repro manager at Mastercolour, Denis Exall, explained: "It fitted in with what we were already doing.

We especially like the way the workflow deals with special colours." Although cost was not top of the list of priorities, coming after support for the new press and flexibility, it was, of course, taken in to consideration, he said.

And he continued: "A large deciding factor was the fact that we are not tied in to a consumables deal.

There were other CTP systems but they relied on using their plates.

We prefer to use the Kodak Elektra plates and we can negotiate deals with our preferred suppliers." Mastercolour, whose turnover is expected to increase by 12 per cent to £7m this year, has seen its plate usage double in the last two years.

It expects to increase from 600 plates per week to 700.

The firm's managing director, Philip Exall, added: "The way people buy print is changing.

We used to produce much longer runs but they are getting smaller and smaller.

The flexibility of CTP allows us to run smaller jobs more economically." The Screen Platerite joins an existing B2 platesetter and replaces an imagesetter.
