SE Colour of Johannesburg believes it is imaging the largest plates in South Africa after installing a Screen Platerite Ultima 24000 CTP system, ATM24000 and Trueflow v3.4 workflow.

SE Colour of Johannesburg believes it is imaging the largest plates in South Africa after installing a Screen Platerite Ultima 24000 CTP system, ATM24000 and Trueflow v3.4 workflow Joint owner and director of SE Colour, Marc Sandler, said: "As far as I know, no other bureau or printing company in South Africa is producing plates for posters as big as 1,610mm x 1,240mm

We have Screen's Platerite Ultima 24000 to thank for the fact that we now have cornered a niche in the industry, in producing quality, very large format plates at high-speed." Screen's Platerite Ultima 24000 is said to be able to image 23 full-size plates (1,524mm x 1,143mm) an hour and the system installed at Johannesburg-based SE Colour complements a range of existing Screen systems, including two filmsetters and a scanner.

The company is using the Platerite Ultima 24000 to image Agfa Thermostar P970 plates, which are supplied by Kemtek Imaging Systems, Screen's local supplier that provided the complete system.

Sandler continued: "Before installing the Platerite Ultima 24000, SE Colour produced very large positives manually through a projection process.

To create large format plates we had to undertake a series of processes, which required a great deal of time, skill and operator intervention.

Now, with the Platerite Ultima 24000, we are producing even larger plates automatically, in a matter of minutes." Family-owned SE Colour, established in 1974 and employs 25 people.

It offers design and pre-press services to a number of printers specialising in the furnishings retail sector.

It is the specific demands of this particular marketplace - those being greater colour consistency, accuracy and faster turn-around times - which originally spurred SE Colour to consider investing in CTP.

Sandler said: "An increasing number of point-of-sale and advertising print buyers are requesting work is processed with CTP technology, as they find the accuracy and faster turn-around times desirable.

If we were unable to provide CTP facilities, then the printers we service would be tempted to bring a system in-house, just as a means of keeping their clients." And he added: "The Platerite Ultima 24000 was originally installed to sustain our market share; however, implementing the system has provided us with a powerful springboard to growth.

There are certainly many business opportunities for SE Colour in South Africa's large format sector.

This is because creativity in the industry is being driven by new, more refined systems and the technology is accessible for both large and small businesses alike." And he explained that in addition, there is pressure on brand owners to find bigger and better ways to advertise their products in a competitive commercial world, making large format printing an expanding area.

Sandler concluded: "With our new Platerite Ultima 24000, SE Colour intends to capitalise on these growing trends and will launch a new growth strategy, which could lead to further investment for our company next year.".
