B1 commercial printers MWL has installed a Screen 8600S PlateRite system with SAL single plate autoloader, to complement its existing 8000 model

The new system was installed to guarantee an unmatched service for the organisers of high-profile sporting events such as Wimbledon and The British Open MWL, which employs 90 staff, was established in 1977 and has used Screen's PlateRite technology and Trueflow software for the last eight years

Reluctant to make any changes to its current workflow and set-up, the company did not consider approaching any competing manufacturers when it decided to take on a further platesetter.

Mark Partridge, repro and print manager at MWL, says: "Screen technology is known for its ability to provide high-quality output efficiently and consistently".

"Having worked with our existing Screen system for a number of years, we knew the PlateRite 8600S would be the right machine for us".

"It is our experience of working with Screen that makes us entirely confident of the company's capacity to provide reliable systems along with the highest level of customer care".

"With the purchase of our second PlateRite and autoloader, we have invested in the service Screen offers as much as the technology itself".

"As a machine that is capable of producing up to 22 plates an hour; the PlateRite 8600S has the potential to triple plate production at MWL's Pontypool site".

"However, the system has primarily been taken on by the company as a back-up machine; to ensure processes are always kept running smoothly ".

"As an only platesetter, our existing Screen PlateRite 8000 was running 24 hours a day 7 days per week in order to keep our presses running to the maximum".

"Our entire production relied on this one system so; although we see reliability as being a prominent feature on Screen's PlateRite technology; we still wanted to be well prepared for a worst case scenario".

"Our latest investment ensures we never have to let our clients down due to machine failure".

"Before installing the PlateRite 8600S, pressure on MWL's reprographics department was at a constant high".

"Employees in charge of managing the company's five Heidelberg presses would often be waiting for plates as soon as they came off the machine".

Partridge concludes, "By installing the Screen PlateRite 8600S, we have completely eradicated these pre-press bottlenecks and we are back in control of the entire printing process".

"Our latest investment has had the effect of increasing our plate production by 20 percent to 5000 units per month".

"We have also been able to reduce our overheads by 27 percent, which has been achieved through cutting back on the amount of hours the reprographics department remains in operation".

A privately owned company, MWL has a sister digital division called MWD, which employs a further 40 people and was launched in the late 1990s.

The company offers design and finishing facilities to an impressive portfolio of clients including the Metropolitan Police, Offsted, Governmental offices, sporting and event organisers, design agencies and commercial companies such as Panasonic.
