The Media Technology Company of Dainippon Screen is to open Media Square Kyoto in Japan, an exhibition space displaying printing products, including inkjet printers.

According to Screen, Media Square Kyoto will have a range of functions.

In addition to being a showroom, it will be a base from which Screen can offer integrated systems, including inspection and post-press processing, as well as services, such as database management.

It will also be where customers and vendors from all over the world can provide almost immediate feedback to the company's product development divisions.

Media Square is housed at Screen's printing and pre-press research and development centre at its Kumiyama Site.

Screen said that it plans to capitalise on its core printing-related technology, as well as the knowledge it will gain from Media Square Kyoto as it aims for sales of 25 billion Yen in 2011 in the growing print on demand (POD) equipment field, where increased demand is expected worldwide.

The company has claimed that it has the highest share in the CTP equipment market and it anticipates the promotion of its POD equipment business alongside its CTP equipment to solidify its position in the printing and pre-press sectors.

Screen commented that in recent years, the printing industry has shifted away from mass production and becoming increasingly focused on producing small amounts of products with varying content that provide added value to the individual receiving them.

For that reason, POD systems that can produce the desired number of individualised products exactly when they are needed are becoming more common.

The company referred to an Infotrends report that said that the total sales for POD output on to paper in the United States is predicted to increase to 10 trillion Yen in 2011, which indicates that the digital printing equipment market, which is suitable for POD output, is growing year by year.

Expectations are said to be particularly high for inkjet printers, which can be used in a range of industries and printing fields.

Screen said that given those developments in the printing industry, it is actively promoting the development of inkjet printers for POD applications.

The company believes it has a history of developing and marketing products that meet the evolving needs of the printing market, including digital printing systems that are suitable for printing on to paper, as well as specialised printing for use in banners and illuminated signs, for instance.
