Ian Mayor, Editor, writes:

Some good news was announced in the last few days by the organiser of
the UK's Northprint exhibition to be staged next month in Harrogate.
It relates to the significant improvement in facilities to be provided
for visitors to the show. There will be seminars, an advice centre
run by the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) and
discussion forums - all very much features of top-line exhibitions in
today's market and I'm personally delighted that Northprint is being
brought in to line with expectations in that way. However, whilst in
a far more prosaic way but, to my mind perhaps even more importantly,
IIR has arranged for the provision of shuttle buses to and from
Harrogate railway station and from the Great Yorkshire Showground just
outside the town centre, where there will be substantial car parking.

Anyone who knows Harrogate well through visiting previous Northprints
will know of the extreme difficulty in parking, even though there is a
large car park just a short walk from the exhibition halls. But like
other towns that have their charm rooted in an historic and attractive
environment, ease of movement combined with a high volume of traffic
make visiting events that are designed to boost an industry and
spin-off desirable extra cash in to the local economy a very
unappealing proposition. So, full marks to IIR for addressing the
matter and I hope the new services and facilities contribute to the
show's success and supplement the recent investments that have been
made in the exhibition facilities in Harrogate.

I can make the last comment with some heartfelt emotions as I pay my
local taxes to Harrogate - perhaps exhibition organisers might
consider tackling more permanent issues that might make a difference
in the area. But then again, that might just be asking a little too
much!

area of production said the organisation. Sheffield-based printer,
Northend, has already started down the route of lean manufacturing,
which is the term used to describe how companies like Toyota work. It
is a role model for many manufacturers that wish to emulate Toyota's
level of quality and costs.
