Wiltshire (UK) design and print company, Superior Creative, has added more versatile personalisation with the installation of a Domino On-Demand variable data printing (VDP) system.

Wiltshire (UK) design and print company, Superior Creative, has added more versatile personalisation with the installation of a Domino On-Demand variable data printing (VDP) system Richard Blueitt, operations director of Superior, began investigating VDP technology as the company sought to add impetus to its services, whilst providing increased flexibility to respond to client demands

Importantly, Superior was looking for something that would boost efficiency by reducing costs, whilst offering the company the added value of effective personalisation.

Explained Blueitt: "We looked at several companies claiming to operate at the forefront of VDP technology.

In short, they didn't offer the same advanced technology as the On Demand, which for us was the ability to print personalised copy in-line with variable data and with differing quantities of individual leaflets.

We needed something that would deliver high resolution output, but not at the expense of speed." On Demand is a complete VDP package comprising estimating, pre-press, proofing and printing modules.

Utilising drop-on-demand Piezo technology to print text and graphics, On Demand provides the answer to Superior Creative's need for a high-speed, high-performing, in-line system for variable data personalised print jobs.

Although Superior was already offering personalisation printing, the process was both laborious and costly.

"Previously, our personalisation printing was 100 per cent litho based.

That entailed printing leaflets in full colour on our B1 press, stopping the press each time, changing the plates and re-starting the job to over-print them, which was disruptive.

That was compounded by the added constraint of a seemingly ever-shorter client deadline," commented Blueitt.

One of Superior's long-term projects centres around the printing of one-third A4 sized leaflets for around 1,600 outlets located throughout the UK.

Each outlet has around 1,000 personalised leaflets with its own specific details, including contacts and individualised marketing services and is printed every month in seven to 10 days.

By utilising On Demand, Superior is now able to increase up-time by eradicating the need for plate changing, whilst at the same time providing a print quality consistent with that achieved via litho said Domino.

Added Blueitt: "On Demand allows us to offer personalisation far more effectively and cost-efficiently and takes us into the next generation of marketing services." Together with greater print quality and better use of colour - such as in the printing of Pantone-matched spot colours, Superior can now offer clients a number of different font and graphic options for high impact personalisation.

Additionally, as the Domino system is connected to a GUK 74 Folder and GEW UV drying unit, print output is dried instantly.

That avoids the need to build in additional time in the finishing phase thereby reducing workflow time and further increasing efficiency added Blueitt.

"We pride ourselves on being able to offer our clients a full marketing support resource structured around a major in-house facility.

The printing aspect of that facility is now greatly enhanced by On Demand via its speed, flexibility and ability to offer colour output without compromising productivity," concluded Blueitt.
