Domino Integrated Solutions Group is partnering with pharmaceutical giant Astra Zeneca to provide elements of a serialised authentication initiative across a number of its worldwide high-speed packaging lines Using its experience in handling high-speed laser and ink jet variable data coding systems, Domino said it will print a unique and random carton number (UCN), embedded in a two-dimensional data matrix code, to the item-level drug carton at Astra Zeneca's manufacturing facilities

Domino's Inkjet Finds Niche With Software Printer
Beshara Press, the niche printing company for the software publishing industry, has invested in a Domino A400 to produce unique numbers on the back cover of manuals.
As a result, the drugs will be traceable, allowing Astra Zeneca to authenticate the product as it moves throughout the supply chain.
The company said that the use of the UCN and bar coding on each carton enables automatic data collection and processing, resulting in greater supply chain control, patient safety and brand authentication.
According to David Teale, director of product security at Astra Zeneca: "This is an important investment in the company's commitment to ensure final product integrity and safeguard patients." Simon King, director of Domino's Integrated Solutions Group, explained: "Our flexible traceability systems are tailored to meet the recommendations by global regulatory bodies and are in line with EFPIA's (European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations) recent recommendation concerning secure serialised code structures embedded in two-dimensional data matrix code carriers for item-level coding." And he added: "In addition, serialised product tracking enables compliance with the e-pedigree requirements now coming in to force in a number of markets.
The data matrix code is highly regarded for its robust structure and the volume of data it can encode in a very small space.
In addition to a serialised number, it can also include a Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) as well as lot number and expiry date.
For other applications, RFID might be a preferred data carrier.
As track and trace technologies are further embraced by pharmaceutical manufacturers, we will see a mixture of code carriers being applied, depending on individual customer requirements.".
