Ficelle ProPack is said to unite the whole production chain, including retailers, designers, pre-press suppliers and printers, in a shared workflow via the Internet.

It is claimed to provide a secure environment for communication, tracking, administration and approval of packaging jobs.

Alcan Packaging has already installed the first Ficelle ProPack at its flexible packaging pre-press and gravure engraving site in Teningen, Germany.

There, Alcan's customers are said to include Marks and Spencer, Danone, Bayer and Nestle.

Commenting on the purchase of ProPack, Albert Scheffer, Alcan's director of the shared pre-press service centre said: "In order to increase efficiency, streamline production, reduce wastage and offer improved customer service, we needed to introduce secure workflow communications.

Ficelle is the only system that has the level of customisation, flexibility and security to handle the challenge." Dalim said that Ficelle ProPack allows all those involved in the production process to have access to real time information and a view from any location within one interface that can be customised.

The system is designed to suit the specific requirements of packaging producers where the production workflow is characterised by numerous labour-intensive tasks that have to be completed to a high level of quality and colour integrity.

Users can view their jobs on screen with clear updated file status and larger detailed views of PDF files are possible.

Ficelle is an extension of Dalim's Twist production automation system that works with web application software to provide instant access to the complete production status of a packaging job through a standard web browser.

Information is accessed from a database and published over a secure website in a form that varies depending upon the user login.

Its JDBC compliance allows data to be fed into an accounting and management information system.

Its claimed ability to be seamlessly integrated with a company's existing SAP system is saidd to make Ficelle ProPack a powerful business component for packaging enterprises.

Based on open standards it allows complete integration with a company's existing workflow system and is easily configured to suit the individual requirements of everyone in the production chain.
