Dalim Software's Mistral software has won the PIA/GATF Intertech Technology Award.

Dalim Software's Mistral software has won the PIA/GATF Intertech Technology Award Mistral is a web-based system that automates and communicates the planning, staffing, scheduling and tracking of print and publishing projects

The system sits on top of workflows as a JDF-compliant web-based common electronic submission interface and print production management system for tracking, administration, assembly, correction and approval of publishable material.

Views of project status, such as colour-coded icons, are available in real time, from a web browser, as well as thumbnails and PDF full views of completed content.

The backbone of Mistral is a complete production automation software capability, said Dalim.

Mistral is claimed to allow users not only to collaborate but also to build complete workflows between client and printer.

By allowing every project participant to have what the company described as a common virtual workspace as a job moves through various stages of production, Mistral provides transparency and collaborative working.

Although PIA/GATF sponsors and coordinates the award process, a committee comprising industry technical experts carefully reviews the nominations and makes the selections.

Dalim said that one comment from the judges said: "Mistral does what people have been trying to do for a long time - workflow, automation - and incorporating the web in to the process." Another judge said: "Mistral brings management in to the system", whilst another commented: "The web-based customer contact is impressive." And in a letter written to support Dalim's bid for an award, Ed Zepernick, the director of technology at Continental Web Press, said: "Continental Web is seeing improved communications, allowing worldwide customer access to our digital platform.

Mistral fundamentally benefits our business more than any system we have invested in years." And he added: "From a pre-press production aspect, we're seeing productivity gains over our previous system in the order of at least 33 per cent, as the expertise of our staff and clients grows.

Our investment in Mistral is also providing an exceptional opportunity to build sales by demonstrating this powerful interactive, collaborative workflow to prospects." Another Mistral user, Lee Edberg, Brown Printing Central's pre-media manager, added: "Dalim Software's products have allowed Brown to stay competitive in the market and in many cases, our close development partnership with Dalim Software has positioned us as a leader in our industry." Dalim Software's chief executive officer, Dr Carol Werle, explained: "We believe this is a clear testament of our technological leadership in developing innovative graphic arts productivity software.

When we first introduced Mistral, we strongly believed that we had developed a significant technology that was set to change the printer and print buyer relationship.

Since then, printers, publishers and packaging companies have seen the real benefits that Mistral offers to their businesses - and their clients' businesses." And she continued: "The PIA/GATF 2006 Intertech Award is a considerable honour and recognition of the consistent impact our technologies have presented to the graphic arts industries for over 20 years." The PIA/GATF instituted the Intertech Technology Award nearly 30 years ago as an industry service to promote an understanding of advanced technology in the graphic arts.

The criteria for nomination stress that the technology should be recently developed, proven in an industrial application but not yet in widespread use.

In essence, the award stands as a prediction that the recipient technology will have a major impact on industry production and profitability.
