To offer producers practical help in reducing their costs, Deublin and Parsons Reiss are holding a series of nationwide seminars entitled on energy-efficient paper drying.

Whilst it is an energy-intensive industry, pulp and paper producers have made significant progress in the past decade said Deublin.

Primary energy consumption has been reduced by 16 per cent and specific electricity consumption is down by 11 per cent.

The average energy use per tonne of product is around 16 GJ - two-thirds less than the 24 GJ required in 1990.

Substantial improvements like those are the result of investment in combined heat and power (CHP) or co-generation plants, heat exchangers and the introduction of drying hoods as well as improved process technology.

However, with the drying process accounting for 75 per cent of steam consumption, in both pulp and paper machines, it is more important than ever that steam is utilised efficiently: in the drying of paper it takes 1.5 tonnes of steam to dry one tonne of chemical pulp.

Deublin believes that energy-efficient paper drying seminars offer a series of educational and informative presentations by experienced engineers on the optimisation of the paper drying process.

From slow speed specialist machines to the highest speed newsprint machine, the seminars are claimed to offer practical help in improving the efficiency and 'runability' of the dryer section.

Together with actual application examples and demonstrations, the presentation programme includes subjects such as condensate behaviour and effective evacuation at different machine speeds, improving efficiency with turbulence bars and development in paper machine steam joints.

The sessions will also examine energy-efficient use of steam in papermaking and advanced control system for dryer sections.

Seminars start at 10.00am and finish at 2.30pm, with luncheon provided for attendees.

Deublin added that yime is built-in for questions and answers, offering delegates an opportunity to address specific issues of importance.

The speaker from Parsons Reiss will share some of his company's experience in steam system design and optimisation, whilst Deublin will demonstrate how its products provide optimised solutions for dryer drainage.

Seminars have already been held in Scotland, North West England and in Kent.
