Alongside the savings achieved with the new rollers, Tyneside Printers operational manager Kevin Hall said: "The company can also achieve improved machine utilisation and improved workflow.

"In the past we used polyurethane rollers costing £400 each but because of the weight of them and the complexity of removing them for grinding and resurfacing each time, we needed two people to perform the task and it would routinely take between 30 and 40 minutes per roller.

Because of these factors and our work levels we had to have up to 20 rollers in stock at any one time which is both expensive and a poor use of space," he added.

Now the company uses Duco Superstrip 4 offset blankets, pre-barred by Duco to fit Crabtree Presses.

Duco said that the cost of each blanket is approximately £100 and fitting has become a five minute job for just one person.

Hall commented further: "Apart from the terrific savings in cost and time, we find the Duco products offer far greater smash resistance and our storage requirements have been reduced by 95%.

Duco blankets can be used three or four times on average, depending on the length of the run and we can keep a stock of spare blankets for a fraction of the cost of comparable rollers.".
