Cromalin investment confirms long relationship
Seven Worldwide installs DuPont Cromalin Digital proofing equipment.
By replacing its offset presses (Heidelberg TOK, Rotaprint 30/90 and Itek 613S), with digital machines the printing department addressed issues such as space and job turnaround times.
However, the DMB-400 booklet maker online to a Xerox DocuTech did not provide full flexibility, therefore SOAS decided to make the transition to near-line digital finishing 15 months ago and approached Duplo for the solution.
Patrick Quow, print services manager at SOAS commented: "Due to our changing requirements, I started to explore digital finishing options to enhance our production.

Duplo's Short Run Bindery Agency Offers 3 Machines
Strengthening its industrial bindery business, Duplo International has started to market and sell a range of short run bookbinding systems manufactured by Short Run Solutions Ltd (SRS).
Having worked with Duplo for a long time and always been very impressed with the company and the service provided, there was no question of going anywhere else." He said he viewed a DBM-400 booklet maker connected to a DSF-2000 sheet feeder and were sold on its ability to feed digital work offline at high speed.
"By investing in a DSF-2000 sheet feeder and connecting it to our existing DBM-400 booklet maker, we now have a digital finishing solution that has proved invaluable, allowing us to finish digital printed output productively, without having to invest in a completely new system.
We see the finishing arm of our in-house printing business as being the most crucial element.
A large percentage of material is sent externally to prospective students and governors, therefore, presentation is critical in maintaining the school's growth and professional image," added Quow.
SOAS, which was established in 1916, and currently educates some 3,000 students annually, has always been firm supporter of Duplo, having first invested in an early Duplo bookletmaking system in 1988 for its print room.
The print room was developed as an internal offset print business to bring the volumes of work outsourced to third party suppliers in-house, enabling the school to produce a variety of literature internally for both internal and external purposes.
In addition to buying a DSF-2000, SOAS also invested in a DC-545HCEX slitting, creasing and trimming machine, to produce folded leaflets and business cards from digitally produced output.
"We were being asked to finish full colour work, and produce a variety of printed applications for the school, such as business cards and leaflets which needed scoring.
We were using a guillotine, however, as the demand for this type of work accelerated, we needed to invest in equipment that could cater for the school's requirements," said Quow.
The DC-545HCEX is fully automated and operators simply select the right program and then walk away from it until the job is finished, thus enabling staff to cater for additional work.
The machine also prevents cracking which is a concern when folding paper or card.
"Having a digital print and print finishing environment in place has revolutionised the way we operate as an in-house printing operation.
We are now running a profitable business, which in time we hope to offer externally to other educational establishments in the London area," concluded Quow.
