Northprint Debuts For Finishing Systems

Duplo International announced four new product innovations at Northprint 2005 yesterday.

Visitors to the Duplo stand - 330, hall C - are seeing for the first time the company's SCC slit, cut and crease bookletmaking system, the DBM-2KT two-knife trimmer, and full production versions of the DC-645 production colour finisher and the DCM-45/75 creaser and perforator from Multigraf.

Also on show is a variety of other modular products and systems for offset and digital printers.

The SCC bookletmaking system has been designed to eliminate several manual offline processes such as creasing and guillotining digitally printed sheets, said Duplo, which claimed that a revolutionary feature is that the SCC system trims digital output to produce full bleed pages and adds a centre crease to achieve crack free folded booklets, brochures and other material, said the company.

A typical SCC application is merging an SRA3 printed cover with A3 printed inner pages to produce an A4 book with full bleed cover.

Traditionally, digitally printed sheets need to be pre-guillotined before the bookletmaking process, piles often need to be split, which means pages can end up out of sequence.

With the SCC, sheets can be placed straight on to the bookletmaker from the press, merged and finished in a single pass.

That eliminates the need for the often time consuming production steps that are required before bookletmaking, claimed Duplo.

The SCC bookletmaking system comprises a DSF-2000 sheet-feeder and SCC module in-line to Duplo's flagship System 5000.

Sally Dobinson, the UK managing director at Duplo commented: "Today's digital printers are constantly looking at ways of providing a more competitive service.

One way of achieving improved quality and simplifying the print production workflow is to streamline processes at the finishing end.

Supporting the need to reduce costs and turn-around times." Duplo's new DBM 500 2KT provides an independent modular approach to trimming all open sides of a booklet removing the need to pre-guillotine printed pages before collating, saving both time and money, claimed the company.

Forming part of Duplo's complete bookletmaking process, the new unit trims the head and foot of completed booklets, brochures and other business material.

Dobinson continued: "Removing production stages for faster turn-around and improving quality are prime drivers for every print business.

The new two-knife trimmer gives a three knife trim option, whilst offering a cost effective upgrade path to existing users." In an age where speed, versatility, flexibility, productivity and accuracy are crucial to a commercial printer's success, Duplo's new generation of finishing machines, the DC-645 production colour finisher, is designed to match the output of high end production digital presses and is said to be able to produce regular and folded business cards, postcards, greeting cards, full bleed brochures, direct mailers and other bespoke print on demand with materials on stocks of up to 350gsm.

Most colour digital applications require the ability to trim to a full bleed product, or crease for crack free folding of digital print.

The Duplo DC-645 combines slitting, trimming and creasing in one product, with all three functions operating in a single pass, saving spavce and manpower, added Duplo.

Claimed to be easy to operate, it finishes up to 26 sheets per minute and accommodates paper weights from 100gsm to 350gsm.

It has an optional PC based user interface and JDF connectivity, making it simple to programme, and as the market continues to migrate towards new and more varied print jobs, the flexible design can incorporate additional tool modules such as business card cutters, perforators or scorers, said Duplo.

New from Multigraf, the high volume, high speed DCM-45/75 creasing, micro-perforating and slitting machines feature tech-ni-fold tri-score technology, said Duplo.

Suction fed machines, they score up to a claimed 30,000 A4 sheets per hour, making it suitable for printers who want high-quality mark free creasing, slitting and mico-perforation of digital and litho printed sheets.

The DCM-45 and wider format DCM-75 can be connected to the modular range of Multigraf feeders and folding machines or run in-line with printers and other machines.

Products that can be processed include cardboard, greeting cards, laminated sheets, digitally printed paper, plastic and PVC sheets.

Also on show at Northprint from Duplo is the automated MR720i perfect binder, a DC-545HCEX cutter-slitter-creaser, a table top DB-200 perfect binder and a PFI 490 guillotine.

Alongside that, the company's Mini Print Room products - a range of systems designed for the small inplant sector including Duprinters, desktop folding machines, numbering machines and mini-collating systems - are being demonstrated throughout the exhibition.

Sally Dobinson added: "Duplo's aim is to offer automated and flexible finishing products that provide printers with the option to upgrade their systems as their businesses grow.

Northprint gives us the opportunity to communicate this message to the UK print and communications industry and we believe our new products, along with our expertise in finishing will tempt visitors to our stand.

We look to come away from every show with a greater understanding of the evolving print market.".
