The benefits of a reduced investment risk with an off-line converting machine were demonstrated with the Lambda converting system by Edale during Labelexpo 07.

According to Edale, the plug and play Lambda received interest from narrow-web printers and converters, partly because of one of its claimed ability to provide different applications from the same machine The machine can be configured for RFID, adhesive coating, peel and reveal labels, or other applications, said the company

Such processes can be incorporated in to one machine, which can be upgraded or re-configured at a later date for an alternative application.

The Lambda coater is said to be suitable for short to medium production volumes and is capable of coating speciality materials, metallic foils, holograms and tapes.

The company added that a lot of interest was shown in the Lambda RFID machine on its Labelexpo stand, together Tamarack Products' P500 RFID unit with the capability of removing and replacing defective inlays.

Edale reported that off-line and in-line adhesive coating and RFID applications appear to have been ranking high on converters' shopping lists at Labelexpo.

The company's export director, Bernhard Grob, explained: "Adhesive coating makes commercial sense and it also creates a major, competitive advantage.

The Lambda is the leading European coating machine on the market." He added: "Edale also offers a low-cost Lambda RFID Entry machine for insertion of self-adhesive RFID inlays.

At any point the Lambda can be upgraded to use dry-inlays and to apply more than one inlay across the web, which is something other dedicated RFID machines shown at Labelexpo cannot offer." Lambda applications include a coater installed at a security printing company and a Lambda RFID Entry, which is soon to be installed at a RFID converter.
