EFI has unveiled its latest Fiery, designed to optimise the new 60 page-per-minute colour and 75ppm mono Xerox Corporation Docucolor 260 digital colour printer-copier.

The new Fiery was showcased at Northprint 2007 in conjunction with Litho Supplies The Fiery EX260 colour digital print server, Fiery bustled controller, Splash RPX-ii Mac OS X-based workflow software option and the EFI Color Profiler Suite are said to provide image quality and productivity to meet the needs of Docucolor 260 customers in light production operations, such as graphic communications firms, in-plants, print-for-pay and enterprise organisations

Kevin O'Donnell, Xerox's marketing manager for iGen3 and Docucolor, said: "In conjunction with the new EFI Fiery Colour Server, this system provides a powerful package of features and performance for both the corporate and graphic arts markets." Mehran Farimani, senior vice president and general manager for Fiery products at EFI, commented: "We're proud to collaborate with Xerox to optimise the new Docucolor 260.

As a result of this effort, Xerox customers will benefit from the combination of outstanding image quality at an affordable price in the latest light production colour engine from Xerox and state-of-the-art technology from EFI.".

He added: "From our best Fiery ever, to our new Splash and Color Profiler Suite - EFI solutions for Xerox customers are designed to help them print to win, by improving their ability to print more, higher quality pages, more easily and more securely." The new Fiery Colour Server is said to move away from the familiar tough plastic exterior, to feature an aluminium housing that surrounds EFI's server technology.

The construction of the Fiery Colour Server was designed for EFI by UK-based Sabotage Design and is said to mark the first time that a non-US based firm has been commissioned to design an EFI server.

Head of the design team and managing director of Sabotage Design, Thomas Keen, explained: "Our primary focus was the look and feel of the server and we wanted to introduce an entirely fresh and clean design befitting of EFI's next generation technology.

The main aspect and key differentiator in the design is that the server can double as part of the furniture to turn the whole product in to a workstation, rationalising the amount of material used as a result." He added: "The top of the server boasts the capability to attach a large display, whilst the body of the server can dock in to a free standing piece of furniture on wheels to accommodate a keyboard or colour scanning equipment, for example." The design team at Sabotage worked closely with EFI's mechanical engineers to maintain the integrity of the server's industrial look, whilst the crucial requirements of the server and software technology were developed.

The result is said to be a striking aluminium design that fulfils the objective of combining the server as part of the furniture.

Additional new Fiery features for Docucolor 260 customers that choose the Fiery EX260 include queue management capabilities that eliminate bottlenecks and minimise downtime, resulting in enhanced productivity and improved profitability, said EFI.

It also includes MS Office Filters for hot folders that automate the submission of jobs.

With the Fiery EX260's modular structure, Docucolor 260 customers can meet their present needs and are able to expand the system with optional packages that can handle more complex printing requirements to meet future needs.

With the Fiery open platform and compliance with industry standards such as JDF, PDF and PPML , the Fiery EX260 is said to integrate in to customers' overall print shop operations, serving as a gateway to third-party technologies, Xerox Freeflow systems and EFI products, such as Colorproofa XF for proofing and with EFI Print management information systems for business operations management.

The Fiery bustled controller designed for the Docucolor 260 is said to address the growth in office publishing and colour print volume and document complexity with new features designed to maximise the value of the Docucolor 260 and ensure colour, network integration and productivity, flexibility, security and ease of use, added EFI.

Bustled Fiery capabilities are claimed to include driving more printed pages, printing Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents through an email client without a printer driver and strengthened security, including enhanced LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) support, which designed to eliminate unauthorised operation.

EFI's in-RIP colour management system is said to provide consistent, predictable colour and the bustled Fiery delivers overall greater control by extending Fiery server access to the desktop through EFI's Desktop SE software.

According to the company, Desktop SE enables interactive manipulation of files stored on the desktop, on the network or on the Fiery, from the Docucolor 260 customer's workstation.

Exclusive to Xerox, the EFI Splash RPX-ii is a Mac OS X-based workflow software option for the Fiery-bustled server driving the Docucolor 260.

By supporting Mac Intel, Splash RPX-ii automatically runs at peak performance for the Mac's architecture, added EFI.

When the Mac is powered by an Intel processor, that performance is increased up to four times what is possible on PowerPC-based machines.
