As a result, a base line format for packaging PDF files was introduced at Drupa 2004.
"With the growing popularity of the PDF format in all market segments, the need for PDF enhancement tools such as those that Enfocus provides will continue to grow," said David van Driessche, Enfocus chief executive officer.
"The fact that the packaging sub-committee is the largest and most active organisation in the Ghent PDF Workgroup proves that the interest level is high.
Enfocus Software is committed to delivering the right tools to support the packaging supply chain, ensuring smooth pre-flighting and reliable PDF creation, according to profiles and settings as agreed to in the new base line format, " he added.
Enfocus said it strongly supports initiatives to broaden the application of the PDF format across all graphic arts market segments, believing it to be the ideal format for enhancing communication between parties in the workflow supply chain.
It said its efforts through the Ghent PDF Workgroup to bring together a significant number of international publishing organisations and determine, develop and distribute widely adopted PDF settings and profiles have been globally recognised.
The new base line format for Packaging PDF includes specifications and guidelines for creating and controlling 1.4-compliant PDF files, including transparency layers and spot colours, to ensure accurate proofing and smooth file exchange in packaging workflows.
The research for the base line format and associated best practices workflows has been conducted by a large number of renowned brands, pre-press houses, vendors and printers in the packaging industry in both Europe and the US.
Printers and brand owners use certified PDF.net, Enfocus's on-line resource for PDF specifications, to publish their PDF specifications (either referring to the specifications published by their industry associations, or tailoring these to their specific needs).
PDF creators use Instant PDF to subscribe to these specifications and create PDFs according to these specifications.
These PDFs are then immediately certified, so the creator is 100 per cent sure the PDF responds to the defined quality requirements said Enfocus.
Upon receipt of the file the printer automatically checks the incoming file using Pitstop Server.
One early adopter was Artwork Systems, which announced at Drupa 2004 the full integration of Enfocus certified PDF into its packaging software products, Artpro and Nexus.
Petra Tant, product manager for labels and packaging at Artwork Systems underscored the key role that certified PDF could play in a packaging workflow.
"The certified PDF label will not only guarantee a quality label for packaging PDF file exchange but will provide our users with the indispensable traceability level they all have been searching for," he said.
The Ghent PDF Workgroup subcommittee has implemented extensive testing programs in the production areas of more than 30 of the largest packaging operations, such as Nestle in France and Field Boxmore in the UK.
