Quad Graphics, the largest privately held printer of magazines, catalogues and commercial products in the world, has selected Enfocus Software's Pitstop Library to power its automated PDF workflow.

Quad Graphics, the largest privately held printer of magazines, catalogues and other commercial products in the world, has selected Enfocus Software's Pitstop Library to power its Smartcreate2 automated PDF workflow Smartcreate2, developed by Quad Graphics, is a turnkey product the company's customers can now use to generate a print-ready PDF from a Postscript file

The application appears as a print option on a network.

When Quad customers choose Smartcreate as their print option, the program captures the file, pre-flights and checks it using Enfocus Pitstop and assigns the file a unique identifier.

Both a laser printed version, as well as a PDF are generated.

When the user approves the PDF, it gets transmitted directly to Quad, where it is optimised for print.

By utilising the Enfocus Pitstop Library, Quad Graphics' Smartcreate2 is said to offer the most sophisticated pre-flight, editing and certification capabilities for PDF documents.

Additionally, the technology platform supports Enfocus Certified PDF workflows used for PDF quality assurance and print production.

According to Greg Bae, Smartcreate project leader at Quad Graphics, the goal in developing Smartcreate2 was to provide a user friendly, uncomplicated way for Quad Graphics' clients to create reliable, print-ready PDFs.

He commented: "We selected Pitstop Library technology as our platform for Smartcreate2 because it is the only powerful platform that allowed us to create and customise our application around it.

Pitstop Library is also one of the few platforms that supports file repair downstream, a function that we wanted as part of our PDF production workflow.

It answers our needs both upstream as well as downstream in the workflow." Vicki Blake, the director of business development for Enfocus, said: "We are honored that Quad Graphics selected the Pitstop Library for Smartcreate2, which is not only a truly innovative solution for moving reliable PDF quality control upstream, it's also a great example of our technology being used directly in an end-user scenario.

Smartcreate2 makes it easier for Quad Graphics and its clients to save time, decrease error rates and improve efficiency and quality without adding steps in clients' typical processes.

Our clients will be able to produce a laser print and a quality PDF, already prepared for our Quad Graphics throughput, simultaneously.".
