Enfocus has upgraded its PDF quality management systems for graphic arts to be Adobe Acrobat 8 and Intel Mac (Universal Binary) compatible.

Enfocus has upgraded its PDF quality management systems for graphic arts to be Adobe Acrobat 8 and Intel Mac (Universal Binary) compatible As a result, Enfocus's flagship PDF application, Pitstop Professional, along with Pitstop Server, a tool for high-volume PDF pre-flighting, and Instant PDF, which produces press-ready PDFs, now offer increased performance and unparalleled functionality, claimed Enfocus

Upgrades will be available during the first week of March.

Complimentary upgrades will be available to customers who have bought earlier versions of the product o,n or after December 15 2006.

Filip Carrein, product manager for commercial colour and publishing at Enfocus, said: "Our key products are now fully operational with the Intel Mac platform and the latest Adobe Acrobat 8.

We are delighted that our customers will be able to take advantage of the increased speeds and extended options these upgrades will provide and we are confident that the latest versions of our software bring many new and enhanced features that ensure they will continue to be favoured by publishing production departments across the world." Publishing technology and process consultant, David Zwang, said: "Using Pitstop Profiles and action lists is still the best way to check and fix almost any PDF that finds its way in to a production workflow.

Pitstop Professional is a must-have product for any PDF production workflow and Pitstop Server is the best way to ensure that when large volumes of pages make their way through the process, they are ready to RIP." The latest upgrade of the PDF pre-flighting and editing tool, Pitstop Professional, is claimed to provide new features for users.

Pitstop Professional is key to providing the Enfocus certified PDF technology that so many magazine and newspaper publishers, and printers rely on for reliable and accurate file exchange, said the company.

As well as supporting the latest technology with Universal Binary and Adobe Acrobat 8, Pitstop Professional 7.1 features a new navigator, which allows the user to identify and interactively correct errors reported in pre-flight more easily than before, whilst newly redesigned global change and action list features automate time-consuming repair of common errors.

In addition, a new 'place PDF' function for simplifying the building of a page from multiple PDFs, which is one of the most requested features by pre-press and advertising agency professionals.

The upgrade is also said to embody the ability to create outlines of text, whilst it has a new interactive cropping tool to resize PDF files and it now also has a new, customisable pre-flight report with links to online help for errors.

Compliant with the PDF/X and Ghent PDF Workgroup specifications, Enfocus PDF Profiles are claimed to allow checking of all critical issues and automatic correction of over 100 of the most common errors.

Enfocus Certified PDF technology embeds the PDF profile and pre-flight report in the file for reliable file exchange.

The report layout in this latest version is customisable and clear, whilst being easy to read and print, said Enfocus.

The company also commented that advancements will benefit Pitstop Server 4 users, because of the software's universal Binary, which natively supports the Intel Processor-based Mac to improve performance.

It identifies and pre-flights all files produced by Acrobat 8, Distiller 8 and any application capable of exporting PDF 1.7 files, added the company.

The system is fully compatible with Pitstop Professional 7, allowing users to share PDF Profiles and action lists across the workflow.

The company added that the system has crash protection, with Pitstop Server catching and quarantining unstable PDFs, whilst there are reports available in XML-format (in addition to PDF) for database integration, or re-purposing elsewhere in the workflow.

At the same time, the system provides automatic email notification of software upgrades and maintenance updates.

Using Enfocus PDF profiles, action lists and certified PDF technology, Pitstop Server is claimed to instantly analyse, correct, reports on and route files based on the most stringent industry standards, including PDF/X-1a, PDF/X-3, and Ghent PDF Workgroup, said the company.

Users drop PDF files in to an input folder and Pitstop Server 4 does the rest, added the company, pre-flighting or correcting a range of pre-press problems and rejecting files that fail to meet the criteria defined by the Pitstop Profile.

Pitstop Server 4 utilises Enfocus's action lists to automate repetitive editing tasks, such as page numbering and colour correction.

Enfocus Instant PDF 4.0 can also export certified PDFs directly from QuarkXPress and Adobe Creative Suite for claimed improved performance and easier collaboration, added the company.

The latest version of the Enfocus tool, using the company's certified PDF technology, creates PDFs that comply with print or advertisement vendors' specifications.

Now Instant PDF is fully compatible with Pitstop Professional 7 and Pitstop Server 4, using the most up-to-date set of Enfocus PDF profiles and action lists.

Because files are always output correctly from the designer's workstation, print providers will see a reduction in the customer service and pre-press operator workload, said Enfoucs.

Files prepared with Instant PDF 4.0, using certified PDF technology to guarantee their readiness, will be print-ready upon receipt.

The latest versions of the Enfocus products can be seen on stand 1504 at Graphics of the Americas in Orlando, Florida (USA) from March 2 - 4.
