Heronswood Press, general commercial printers in Tunbridge Wells, Kent (UK) has installed a Thando 50P pile turner from Encore Machinery.

"In the last four years, we have replaced all our presses and two or these are four and five colour Komori Lithrone presses, which don't have pre-loaders.

As most of the production is printed both side, the press minders had to turn the pallets over by hand," said Nigel Room, whose father started the business in the seventies.

He added: "We first saw the Thando being demonstrated on the Encore stand at IPEX.

We knew immediately that it would make a significant difference to our productivity but at the time we had a lot of other capital expenditure planned in our pre-press and finishing departments.

Finally we bought it two months ago and we are already enjoying a 20 per cent increase in productivity.

The staff like it because it makes their life easier.

It's very simple to use.

Once they've put the pallet of paper on to it, all they have to do is press a couple of buttons and the Thando turns it over." Heronswood is also using the Thando in its finishing department, where it has found it useful to finish jobs that are numbered because the company can turn over a whole pallet at a time without worrying that the numbers go out of sequence.

"We also use to take a job off a machine pallet if it goes out for specialist finishing, like die cutting or perfect binding," added Room.
