Printwell, a commercial printer in Mitcham, South London (UK) has installed an MB Prestige Fold Net 52 fully automated folder and a Thando pile turner from Encore Machinery.

Printwell, a commercial printer in Mitcham, South London (UK) has installed an MB Prestige Fold Net 52 fully automated folder and a Thando pile turner from Encore Machinery The machines are part of a GBP1million investment, which also includes three new Xerox digital printers and a Shuttleworth management information system (MIS)

The Prestige Fold Net 52 is a computer-controlled buckle folder.

Its automatic set-up system includes automatic position of setting elements for the flat pile feeder, fold plate stops, deflector, fold roller, alignment rails and delivery roller.

Twenty standard parallel and crossfolds are pre-programmed and it is further possible to save the setting data of more than 200 jobs in a program memory, said Encore Machinery.

Another claimed advantage is the short set-up time for repetitive jobs because the speed, sheet gap, shingled delivery, suction duration, counters, double sheet detection and paper travel control are also set automatically.

It is also said to be an accurate machine with fold correction to within 0.1mm whilst the machine is running.

Chris Down, Printwell's operations manager, said: "Our business has changed over recent time.

For many years we were known for business stationery but now the majority of our work is high quality offset litho and digital process colour.

A lot of it is fast turn-round, sometimes within 24 hours, which is why we bought the three digital printers.

Quality and speed are what it is all about these days and our existing folder, which had a manual set up, didn't give us the versatility of the top of the range, automated MB Prestige Fold, which we specified with cross plates." He added: "It's so easy to operate that I employed a trainee to run it, who is working alongside our folder operator.

All he has to do is select the fold he wants on the touch screen and the machine does the adjustments automatically.

It also saves the settings, which is useful for repeat jobs, or where we are running very long jobs and then put a short run in between.

We have a regular job, which ranges from 10,000 to 200,000 copies and it's so useful to be able to fit other jobs in around it.

Previously it would mean spending quite a lot of time setting it up again, but now all the information is saved in the memory." He explained that previously the company outsourced all its long-run folding jobs, simply because the previous folder was not able to handle it fast enough.

That equated to about 30 per cent to 35 per cent of the business's total folding requirements.

However, the Prestige Fold has increased capacity by 50 per cent and it eats in to the long run litho jobs, whilst being flexible for short-run digital work.

It operates with a Pit Stop high speed creaser, which Encore installed two years ago.

It pre-creases all printed stock above 170gsm prior to folding.

Printwell has also taken delivery of a Thando pile turner and Down commented: "We bought it to operate alongside our five colour Heidelberg Speedmaster 74 press.

Being able to automatically turn a pallet of paper over at the touch of a button will make a big difference to our productivity, particularly when we are printing up to 200,000 multi-page brochures." And Down concluded: "We've set up a good relationship with Encore.

Consequently, we had no hesitation in placing these orders with them.

It' been a good decision and we expect a very fast return on our investment.".
